Each year 6-8 million pets enter shelters, and anestimated 3-4 million are euthanized -- simply because they do not have a loving home.

When PetSmart, Inc. was established in 1988, its founders made a conscious decision not to sell dogs and cats. Instead, they allocated space in their stores for pet adoption agencies to utilize to help address pet overpopulation.

PetSmart Charities, Inc., was established in 1994 as an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animal welfare issues, and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. The largest funder of animal welfare efforts in North America, PetSmart Charities has provided more than $109 million in grants and programs benefiting animal welfare organizations and, through its in-store adoption program, helped save the lives of more than 4 million pets.
