Grassroots group grows like weedsIn 2005 Barbara Ferencz saw that the local animal pounds in her area needed help. They were all small shelters, will low adoption rates and lots of stray animals.

Barbara first started in her hometown of Allen Park. She worked with the shelter to get them registered on petfinder.com and worked to increase adoption rates by requesting the assistance of other rescue groups. Adoptions rose ten-fold.

Once remidied in her own town, she moved onto the neighboring city and worked the same way to improve adoption rates. The pound that was doing almost zero adoptions was then adopting or having rescued, almost all of their adoptable pets.

Barbara founded this grass-roots team in 2005 which has now evolved into Shelter to Home, a 501(c((3) non-profit organization with a focus on saving pound pets.

Shelter to Home now has a volunteer base of 24 members and fosters and adopts 275 animals per year on average, most of which are cats.

Thanks to a citizen seeing a need in her community, hundreds of animals are being saved from death-row every year.
