Blossom, a mixed boxer/terrier puppy was rescued last Spring by Maranatha Farm. Blossom had been tortured in her nose with a screwdriver and had most of her teeth knocked out. Police took Blossom away from her owner but were unable to prosecute the cruelty or provide medical care for the badly mutilated puppy.
Maranatha Farm took Blossom in and has paid for seven surgical procedures over the past 8 months. Several attempts to restore normal breathing have failed. Dr Ellison, Chief of Surgery at University of Florida’s renowned School of Veterinary Medicine, in Gainesville, FL, will operate on Blossom February 6th, removing scar tissue which blocks her breathing passages and installing artificial tubes to allow the terrier to breathe normally through her nose.
Now Blossom breathes through a hole in the roof of her mouth, which clogs with food and becomes infected easily. Most of her life Blossom has had to take antibiotics and sleep with her head held in a certain position to keep the hole from closing.
Until she is well enough to be offered for adoption, Blossom lives with foster family John and Barbara Emerson of Sun City. Until Blossom’s shattered puppy teeth were replaced with permanent teeth, the Emerson’s had to grind her daily food and place it in the back of her mouth past her breathing hole. They have spent many hours driving back and forth to vet appointments and caring for Blossom without complaint. John and Barbara are volunteer heroes!
