PetSmart CharitiesTM Dispatches Emergency Relief Waggin'® to Help Pet Victims of Midwest Floods

Response teams sent to Cedar Rapids and Waverly, Iowa; Indiana; and Wisconsin

6/8/2008

Organization: Morgan County Humane Society

Location: Martinsville, Indiana

Incident: Midwest Flooding of 2008

PetSmart Charities dispatched the Rescue Waggin' on June 8, 2008, to the Morgan County Humane Society to pick up 26 dogs left homeless by record flooding in the Midwest – freeing up much-needed kennel space for other displaced pets in the community.  The Rescue Waggin' transported the dogs that had already been surrendered to the Morgan County facility to the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee to be put up for adoption.

The Rescue Waggin’ made an emergency stop at the Morgan County Humane Society, which was overrun with homeless pets because of heavy rains and severe flooding.  The small shelter did not have enough space, and might have had to euthanize some animals if they could not be taken to another shelter.  In addition, freeing up kennel space in Morgan County was crucial so the shelter would have space for pets who became separated from their families during the floods.  Now displaced pets in Morgan County who end up at the shelter there have a much better chance of being reunited with their loving families because they will remain in their own community.

Incident:  Midwest Flooding of 2008

PetSmart Charities dispatched an Emergency Relief Waggin' on June 13, 2008, to help the animal victims of catastrophic flooding in Iowa and across the storm-torn Midwestern United States.

The 53-foot semi-trailer was dispatched from PetSmart’s distribution center in Ottawa, Illinois, loaded with food, crates, beds, bowls and other items required to help pets displaced by record flooding. The Waggin’ was received by the City of Cedar Rapids at the Kirkwood Community College, and will provide much-needed supplies to assist those who are caring for countless animals who were left homeless by this disaster.  Additionally, PetSmart Charities donated pet food and supplies to the City of Waverly, Iowa; the Brown County Humane Society in Indiana; and the Dodge County Humane Society in Wisconsin.
