PetSmart Charities® partners with animal welfare agencies across the U.S. and Canada to support their efforts to end homeless pet overpopulation. Although adoptions are a critical part of the solution, this problem cannot be solved by adoptions alone. Addressing the root cause of too many unwanted pets will require systemic change.
Each year 6-8 million homeless pets enter animal shelters, and 3-4 million of those are euthanized because there are simply too many pets and not enough adopters. This epidemic inflow of unwanted pets strains shelter resources, threatens public safety, and costs taxpayers millions of dollars each year.
Spay and neuter saves lives. It's that simple.
PetSmart Charities grants millions of dollars every year to support spay/neuter efforts, but we need your help to make an even bigger impact and bring to an end the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.
In October 2008 we announced our landmark Spay Los Angeles Initiative. We are committed to reducing shelter intake, and the euthanasia of dogs and cats for whom there are no homes by increasing the number of spay/neuter clinics that provide affordable services in the city and county of Los Angeles.

It is estimated that as many as 500,000 abandoned or stray pets enter Texas animal shelters each year. In Houston alone, 126,000 pets find their way to the shelters and 71 percent are euthanized each year because there are far more pets than there are adoptive homes.
In November 2007, PetSmart Charities announced its plan to pledge $5 million toward high-volume low-cost spay/neuter programs in the Lone Star State. For more details on this five-year commitment, visit the links below.
