Rudy came to us from a private home where he was very loved but where his owners felt overwhelmed with his training and the behavioural issues of a young, intelligent dog. He is a purebred German Pinscher. Although he is well trained, he did have some dominance issues with people which have now been worked on with his foster parents, and that will not be an issue for someone who is capable of being a confident, experienced leader. He is a young boy, just 11 months old and is up to date with all vetting and is neutered. Here is what Rudy's foster family had to say about him: Rudy is a very smart and happy boy. He loves to be a part of the mix, and he doesn’t miss a beat! Rudy came from a loving home with the best of intentions. Sadly they were mislead on the requirements of his breeding and nature by the breeder. Rudy is in his adolescence and needs to be lead by a calm confident hand. Teaching him what is appropriate behaviour. Luckily he is a quick study! Rudy is a gorgeous boy and in excellent health! He has pearly white teeth, a few baby teeth still to lose, a shiny coat and a nice trim body! He is a busy boy both physically and mentally and will need both stimulation and at the same time structure, to understand when it’s time to be calm. He does pick up on the ques of the room and will attempt to match the energy. Being a young boy he is learning the ropes! He does shed, but he is on a great diet, so the shedding is minimal. Rudy loves other dogs and has been great with our pack. He is a bouncy boy but listens when the other dogs let him know it’s time to settle down, or they have had enough playing. He has greeted all new visitors respectfully, and is living with dog savvy children currently. We do feel that he would do best in a home with older children - over 13, or adults only. He is a a very happy boy and welcoming to any guests. When Rudy first came to live with us he exhibited resource aggression over toys, or any item he had taken without permission. This issue has come leaps and bounds however, and learning the drop it command has made a world of difference with Rudy. As well as the “leave it” command, he needs to understand that he doesn’t get free reign over whatever he would like. Establishing his position in the pecking order has taken time and had its challenges, but happy to say it has happened and he has learned that this behaviour is unacceptable. At times when he is about to make a bad decision he will correct himself and head for his crate. He has been great with other dogs and there were never any aggressive issues or interactions with other dogs. He is actually quite respectful of our dogs and very aware of his position within the pack. He has always lived with cats, and he is inquisitive but respectful with them. Rudy absolutely loves to play! Once he understood where the “dog” toy basket was, he would happily grab a toy, throwing it around for himself, bouncing and playing. He is a young boy and will need frequent walks and mental stimulation to be a productive member of the household. Other then settling in the crate he is exceptionally quiet in the home. He will cry for a bit when first put in his crate, but settles within 10 minutes or so. Faster when he has a chew :) He will bark while wrestling with the other dogs. Rudy is NOT a first time dog owner's pet. He will need to be with someone who has bully-breed or Pinscher experience. Someone who is ready for the challenge of working with Rudy through his adolescence, and nurturing him to grow into the confident companion he so eagerly wants to be! Rudy likes to test the boundaries and if left loose in the home unattended, he will counter surf but responds amazingly to commands to leave it. He knows where and what toys he is allowed to play with, but will try and grab the kids toy or an elastic band if left where he can get it. This is where we have implemented “leave it” and if he doesn’t respond this is where the bad behaviours will be exposed. But 8/10 times, he now will happily drop and continue on his way. Rudy has been to obedience school and is an EXTREMELY smart boy and a very capable. He knows all of his basic commands and responds beautifully. Rudy has not had one accident during his time with us. He learned how to use our dog door within the first couple days and happily does his business outside. Rudy is crate trained. He does best crated in a quiet room on his own. Rudy is a very observant boy - he needs gentle reminders to stay close and walk respectfully with us, but he is fully capable. He currently walks on a Martingale training collar which is all that is required. He enjoys to be told he’s a good boy! He has not tried to leave us at all, he likes to stay where the action is! He is a very aware dog and enjoys looking out the window when in the car and does stay in the back seat. Rudy is a very sweet boy, who just needs the guidance of a calm and confident owner who will be able to set proper structure and boundaries for Rudy. Once he understands his role in the household he will be a companion like no other. He will need his person to have patience, confidence, and commitment in order for the match to be successful. Rudy holds true to the breed specifics so, if you are thinking of adopting, do your research before applying. We feel that Rudy would do best in an active adult home, with another doggo friend to keep him company! Being such a smart dog he would be an excellent candidate for any specialty training. Most important is that he is with a confident owner who has the time and commitment to continuing his rescue and care. If you think Rudy would be a good choice for your situation, please visit our main website at http://www.uglymuttsdogrescue.com and submit an adoption application.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Rudy, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
