ABRAHAM (Tri-colored w/speckles Kelpie) - ( 5 VIDEOS INCLUDED!) Only $85 adoption!!! My adoption profiles tend to be long & very detailed. Please read the ENTIRE Adoption Profile (all the way to the FAQ) so you understand everything about this dog & if you are a good match for him. If you still have questions after reading the entire profile, PLEASE read the FAQ for your answer instead of e-mailing me the question. Most of the questions are answered there, & I'm not always able to answer all the e-mails. The FAQ is at the bottom of every Adoption Profile. Some of the sites that I post on do have space limits & cut it off. In those cases, you can find the full Adoption Profile on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1405138936478168/?epa=SEARCH_BOX Abe has been bounced around a lot. He was originally found as a stray & went to the Animal Control in that area, & was then transferred to a smaller local Shelter. He was very skittish & they said they worked with him for sometime & he bonded with some of them before he was tested and moved to adoptions. He was adopted out through that Shelter and returned due to being to skittish & food aggression towards the other dog (more details on that under the food section below. As a side note though, when he came to Safe Haven, he was skin and bones. So my guess is that they had 1 bowl for the 2 dogs & the other dog wouldn't let him eat. He has been nothing but sweet here!). Anyways, that small Shelter got to be over capacity. So one of the larger Shelters here in the valley took some animals from them to help relieve their over crowded status. While at the big shelter, he was fearful & avoidant and they were going to send him back to the smaller overcrowded Shelter. But that Shelter allowed them to first reach out to the local Rescues to see if any of us could take him. So that is the long story of how he ended up at Safe Haven. Abe is wonderful! He is the sweetest boy! He has been very easy to handle, and has allowed all handling. He was scared at first when being handled and froze in fear, but still allowed all handling. He has started to trust me more now, and no longer freezes when I touch him & seeks out attention from me. He loves to play in the water & is very puppy-like and playful. He has a lot of energy and needs to go to an active person or family that will help him get all that energy out. He will also need someone patient & gentle that is willing to continue to work with him and help him learn. This gorgeous boy looks to possibly be a purebred Kelpie. Here is more info on the breed: https://youtu.be/DDaBJOMdOsY He has a double thick coat that will need to be brushed about once a week to be maintained. He was scared of being brushed at first, but I've gotten him used to being brushed, and now he even enjoys it. I can tell he has not been worked with or handled much. He had a lifetimes worth of undercoat that needed to be brushed out! So far Abe knows "Wait", "Ok" (command release), he comes when called (although he can be apprehensive about it at times), he knows the word "No", but from what I see, he listens to the word "No" because he is afraid of it. Which tells me someone more than likely followed that word with hitting him. I am working with him to learn that "No" just means to stop whatever you are doing, & that he will no longer be hurt anymore. With training, it takes a very soft touch with Abe. I do use food as a reward, and have finally got him to start taking treats from my hand. I haven't done to much more with word training because he still gets scared & thinks he's in trouble. When I started to teach him "Stay" he got scared & regressed a bit & didn't want to then come in the house. So I have held off on that and continue to work with trust, basic house manners, socializing, & letting him know he is safe here. All of the pets at Safe Haven receive basic training when they come here. What each pet learns depends on how much time I have had to work with them, & if that pet has any additional issues that need to be focused on first. The pets here are always improving. Birthday: 10/17/17 Weight at last Vet visit: He was just under 52 lbs. when he came here, and he was skin & bones. Even though he has a double thick coat, I could see his spine & hip bones. He has gained the weight he needed, but I have not had a chance to take him in to get weighed to see what he is now, & I won't be able to do that until the threat of the corona virus is over with. He is probably 65 lbs now. Cats: He appears to be good with cats. He is very playful though, and may try to play with them... The average cat would not appreciate that! I took him to Petsmart to see if he would react to seeing any of the cats there, & I couldn't even get him to look at them. So that was a great sign, but not a full test. A full test would be his reaction to a cat running around... Here is the video of him at Petsmart: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7vC7kwfaPvqq8Yhz8 Small Dogs: He is interested in & friendly with small dogs, & is the most comfortable with new dogs that are smaller than him. He was a little to rambunctious with them when he first got here. He tried to get them to play & he doesn't seem to realize his size... I've been working with him to be more gentle around them, & he now leaves them alone & just plays with the big dogs. But if you only have little ones, he is going to want to play with them... I have also been walking him with some of the small dogs to get him used to doing something with them besides playing. Here is a video of him walking with one of the small dogs here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yJRbiz87QuZSP66p7 Large Dogs: When he first came here, he was interested in the other dogs, but to scared to come out of the crate to greet them. He acted like he wanted to come out and play, but if I opened the crate door, he would cower in the back & not come out to greet the other dog. He is great with them now, & very playful. In fact he is best buddies with my largest male, & they play, play, play all day. Abe was a little spastic when he played at first, but my dogs helped teach him how to play & he is much better now. My impression is that he had not had much experience with other dogs. He has a submissive style where he will stay low to the ground, but he will also jump on the other dog & is high energy. So if you have a dog, your dog would have to be comfortable with that style of play. My large female does not like to be jumped on, & she corrects him. Abe immediately flops on his back and shows submission. Abe is a very sweet, very playful, yet submissive dog. He is a really, really great dog! Here is a video of him meeting a new dog at the dog park. He has improved on going up to meet a new dog, but as you can see, he is not completely confident about going up to a new dog. So he follows behind, and his tail is tucked when the dog interacts with him... https://photos.app.goo.gl/BRSsjT2SMMoDg8p1A Kids: Unknown, but I imagine him to be great with kids because he is so sweet. Men: Sweet and friendly. Seeks attention. Women: Sweet, seeks attention, & wants to be with you. He is a great companion dog and wants to be with you wherever you go. Possibly a little to much, because he can be vocal when you leave, but will quiet down within about 10 min. Because of this though, he may not be the best dog for someone in an apartment. Strangers: Interested in new people. Very sweet, a little timid, but will seek attention from strangers. I was working on taking him out and getting him used to meeting new people & being in new circumstances until the corona virus hit. Food: I feed all the dogs on a rotational diet. Which means they get a different brand of high quality food each month. I do this because I do not think that one brand can provide all the nutrients that they need. Just like one food can't provide us with all that we need...Plus, who wants to eat the same thing every day? Abe was originally free fed (a full bowl of food out all the time) when he first got here because he was so skinny. Now that he has gained the weight he needed, he is on the feeding schedule with the rest of the dogs. All dogs are fed breakfast (7 am) & dinner (5 pm), & are fed in their crate with their own bowl. Plus I add in extra treats like cottage cheese, pumpkin, Mackerel, plain yogurt, peas, and green beans...Abe is not a fan of raspberries though... Other than that, he's been a great eater & has eaten everything I have given him. Since the previous couple complained that he guarded food, I tested him with my dog. He did guard his bowl, but all he did was stand in it. No aggression seen at all. It was actually kinda cute..... I can throw a treat on the floor, and he will not even try to get it if another dog is in the room. He is completely submissive. So my guess is that the other dog in the previous home aggressed when he was trying to eat. Because I do not see any aggression in him whatsoever, & the fact that he was skin & bones when he came here tells me the other dog was the one not letting him eat. If you have other dogs, I will want you to let Abe have his own bowl so that he does not have to worry about getting enough food. Crate Trained: Yes, he will whine & fuss when he needs to go outside. He will not have an accident as long as he is let out regularly. I also take up his food and water a few hours before the last time he is let out to go potty before we go to bed ("last call"). He will go in on his own. He actually finds comfort in the crate & will go in when he is feeling scared or insecure about something. I have been working with him to get him to feel comfortable in the house & show him that he does not have to go straight in the crate. He is getting more comfortable being in the house now. I leave the crate door open when I am home, and he can go in & out as he pleases. He is still crated though when I leave, and at night & we are working towards him being allowed out all the time. He is in a hard plastic crate: 32" W x 48" L House Trained: He appears to be house trained now. It took awhile to get him to understand that he is allowed in the house, but he is using the doggy door now & he hasn't had any accidents in a long time. He is also getting more & more comfortable walking around the house. It is very clear that he was kept as an outside dog, & was punished when he tried to come in the house. I originally had to coax him with treats and talk with a baby voice to get him to come inside. It makes me sad that he was so afraid to just come inside when he wants to, and when he did, he would go straight to the crate at first. Leash Trained: Abe will need at least a 30 min daily walk. The more exercise the better though..... The first time I took him for a walk, it didn't seem like he was used to being on a leash. He darted around, eyes wide like saucers, & I think he would have jumped in my arms if I let him. He walked really close to all the bushes. So much so that he rubbed up against all of them, and sometimes right through them, as we walked. I am assuming that he was looking for a place to hide, & that hiding was his survival technique when he was a stray. He digs holes if you don't get his energy out, so he needs an active person or family. I currently watch him when he goes outside & tell him "No" if he starts to dig. He listens well, & is learning not to do that. That, combined with the increased exercise, he has not tried to dig in awhile... I have been working on getting him comfortable with walks, & he now enjoys them. The only part he is still afraid of is when I put the harness on him. He has even learned some words. He knows "Wait", "Ok" (command release), & we have started working on "Heal". Here is a video of him walking: https://photos.app.goo.gl/57bfFafxj3y1pHTw9 Car: Yes, he does pretty well in the car. I have a large truck that he has trouble loading up in, and he seems a bit afraid of it. So you may have to "help" him in. I am not sure if he will load up in a car. I'll continue to work with him on it. Once in the truck, he does well. He rides in the back seat, belted in with a doggy seat belt & pretty much lays down for the ride, but occasionally looks out the window. Other issues: No other issues other than what I already listed. Abe has a wonderful personality! THEY ARE NOT OBJECTS THAT YOU CAN GET RID OF WHEN THEY BECOME INCONVENIENT. THEY ARE INNOCENT LIVING, BREATHING ANIMALS WITH FEELINGS THAT DEPEND ON YOU TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO TAKE CARE OF, LOVE, & PAY FOR EVERYTHING THIS PET NEEDS FOR UP TO 20 YEARS, THEN PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN APPLICATION. * Safe Haven STRONGLY believes that collars should only be used as decoration or to hold the ID tag. If you are trying to restrain your dog, it can easily slip out of a collar. Also, attaching a leash to a collar puts pressure on the neck, which is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, & could hurt them. For these reasons, Safe Haven includes a harness with every dog adoption to ensure the safety of the dog. A harness distributes the weight on the chest & shoulders. It also has a handle on the back that you can grab if need be, without hurting your pet (EX: Dog falls off your boat, just grab the handle & pull your pet back in with no harm done. With a collar, you would have to strangle your dog when pulling your dog in). Also, it is very hard for a dog to slip out of a harness when properly fitted. So it is much easier to restrain them. FAQ: Q: Is this pet still available? A: Adoption Profiles are taken down & marked adopted as soon as each pet is adopted. So if you see a pet posted for adoption, they are still available. Q: Why are your adoption fees so low? A: Safe Haven does things very differently than other rescues do. If you look at our other pets up for adoption, and also our past adoptions, you'll see that ALL our prices are low. We do this because it generates a lot of interest, and gets the pets adopted quickly. The more that get adopted, the more we can rescue. We only deal with pets in danger of being euthanized. The whole point is to save as many lives as possible! We are all about the animals here. And if you want to add a donation to the adoption price to show appreciation for all the hard work we do, then please indicate that in your application! Q: I don't see a phone #. Will someone please call me? A: Everything needed is online. I have found that online is the most efficient way to get all the work done. In the past, when I posted my #, my phone rang off the hook all day. So I spent the whole day on the phone, with not much work to show for it at the end of the day. Again, everything needed is online. Q: How do I adopt this pet? A: Your first step is to fill out an application. The site we used for our automated applications has shut down. So while we look for another site, please e-mail for an application: Safe_Haven_Animal_Rescue@live.com Q: Can I adopt if I live out of state? A: Yes, Out of state adoptions are welcome, but we ask that you come to AZ with any pets yo have to ensure a good match. Q: Where is this pet? A: This pet is being fostered in a private home. Q: I like what you are doing & would like to help. Would you be open to a partnership? A: Absolutely! I am open to anything that helps care for the animals &/or saves more lives! Please e-mail me at Safe_Haven_Animal_Rescue@live.com and give me details about what you have in mind. Q: How can I donate? A: First, THANK YOU! We rely on private donations to help fund all the costs for these wonderful animals. So your help means a lot! To donate, please click on this link https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=6DRAYJN5XEDZ2 You can pay with your PayPal account, or you can pay with a credit card. If you would like to be a Sponsor by giving a monthly gift, please let me know & I will set that up for you! Being a sponsor, you will get the inside track on updates on how they are doing, and what home they ultimately end up going to! Taking care of each pet gets expensive, and we are so grateful for any monthly donation towards the Vet care, food, treats, toys, training, gas for running them to the dog park, appointments, ect...
