For Adoption: Jackpot! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Are you looking for the perfect dog to join your family? Well, this might just be your lucky day! Jackpot is a six-year-old Shih Tzu who weighs approximately 15 lbs. He is full of love with a charming personality that you can’t help but fall in love with. Everyone that meets this sweet guy can’t help but comment how nice of a dog he is. Jackpot’s background story is somewhat of a mystery as he came to Pound Dog Rescue as an unclaimed stray from the pound. However, given his comfortability around people, and an obvious understanding of house training and basic commands we suspect he had a home at one point. After coming into Pound Dog Rescue, Jackpot was seen by our vets who made sure he is up to date on all his shots and he has been microchipped. They also neutered Jackpot and have recently done some dental work on him as well. His dental was extensive and our vet made some upsetting discoveries. They removed 17 teeth (some of those were broken tooth root fragments that were under his gum line from previous trauma). He also has evidence of what is suspected to be a previously broken jaw on the lower left side that has now healed. This poor dog had some trauma in his life at some point. It’s a wonder he is such a sweet and happy boy. During his assessment, the vet identified a low-grade heart murmur which they have prescribed an ongoing maintenance medication for. His condition is easily manageable with this medication which he will need to permanently continue taking. His medication is necessary for his lifelong wellbeing and the cost of it is approx. $100 a month so this is something that any adopter needs to be able to manage. We can assure you, he is worth it!! As mentioned, Jackpot is housetrained in addition to being crate trained. He has shown some very mild signs of separation anxiety when he is left at home alone. However, putting him in his crate when you’re not home seems to help him to remain calm during these times. While he can be left alone for several hours, he will likely do best with a family where someone is home more often than not. He is generally a very calm and quite dog who rarely barks. The only exception being when he is left alone, he will usually bark when left alone unless he is put in his crate where he feels safe and secure. He would likely be fine in a house or apartment provided his owner is committed to continued crate training. Jackpot would do well in either an adult only home, or one with older children (10 years+) who understand how to respect a dog’s boundaries. In his foster home, Jackpot currently lives with two other small dogs, and they all get along well. He would be fine living in a home with other dogs or being the only dog of the home. He hasn’t been observed around cats but given his calm nature he would likely be fine in a home with a dog-savvy cat. He enjoys going for walks but doesn’t require excessive amounts of exercise. In fact, it’s important to ensure he does not overexert himself to avoid unnecessary strain on his heart, therefore long walks on hot days should be avoided. Despite his short legs, he’s a very agile dog and can easily jump over obstacles, get himself up onto the sofa for cuddles, or get up and down the stairs with ease. Jackpot has a soft white and tan coat with some bits of grey mixed in as well. Shih Tzu’s are a non-shedding breed, so he will require routine trips to the groomer and regular brushing when his coat gets long to avoid any matting. He is a calm and relaxed dog that tolerates grooming activities well. Likewise, he is a good traveler when going for trips in the car. While Jackpot does already know some of the basic obedience commands, at Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. If you’re looking for a loving, easy-going and affectionate smaller dog then Jackpot might just be the perfect fit for your home.
