Her mom, Kelly Heffner, recalls a time Emma made her stop traffic to rescue a caterpillar that was struggling to cross the street. “She's been talking about wanting to be an "animal doctor" since she was three. Her heart is endless when it comes to animals."</p> <p>About a year ago, Emma discovered the Facebook page for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BARCSbaltimore/">BARCS</a>. She was especially taken by the story of Miracle Molly — a homeless pit bull who survived being hit by an Amtrak train in January 2016. A police officer pulled the badly injured dog off the tracks and to safety, and got her to BARCS where she received lifesaving medical care.</p> <p><img alt="Emma with blankets at store" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="81e51a86-6cd0-47a5-a187-2a75ad476409" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/Emma%20with%20blankets%20at%20store.jpg" /></p> <p>Emma raptly followed <a href="https://www.baltimoresun.com/features/baltimore-insider-blog/bal-injured-pit-bull-miracle-molly-goes-to-her-new-home-on-valentines-day-20160215-story.html">Molly's story</a> — her care, her recovery, and then the dog's adoption by the police officer who'd saved her life last February.</p> <p>The family already has a cat and two rescue dogs — adopting every <i>other</i>pet at the shelter wasn't feasible. But Emma was determined to help.</p> <p>Emma made fleece blankets as Christmas gifts for family and friends. One day, one of the family's dogs lay down on one of the blankets as she was making it."</p> <p>Then she said, 'Mommy I can make these for animals at the shelter?' and it went crazy from there," said Emma's mother, Kelly Heffner.</p> <p>The blankets, made out of fleece animal-print fabric, will go home with the pet when they are adopted. Emma has delivered 40 of her hand-made blankets so far. She's enlisted family and friends to help make more, and is raising money to cover the costs of the fabric by selling animal-print blankets to supporters.</p> <blockquote> <p class="blog__quote" dir="ltr"><span>I think they get lonely and I think a blanket would be something that they could have of their own to snuggle. And it makes me feel like I am giving them love.</span></p> <p>- Emma.</p> </blockquote> <p><img alt="Emma holding kitten" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="15a897ea-4be0-4d68-a41e-a4bf6e939856" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/emma%20holding%20kitten.jpg" /></p> <p>BARCS spokesperson Bailey Deacon says the blankets provide the shelter's resident critters warmth, coziness — and sometimes, a first taste of their wonderful lives to come. One day in 1997, Sophia and Lee DiClemente were driving down New Mexico’s Highway 550 when they saw a small dog being hurled out of the car ahead of them.</p> <p>“They pulled over immediately and found a matted and parasite-infested Schnauzer mix,” says Sara Garrigan, executive director of <a href="https://www.wmranch.org/">Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center</a>. “That dog, whom they named Miss Molly, would change their lives.”</p> <p>And the lives of thousands of others, both two- and four-legged.</p> <h2>Services Were Desperately Needed</h2> <p>The DiClementes came to New Mexico with backgrounds in both child and animal welfare. Their dramatic rescue of Miss Molly drew their attention to the need for additional animal welfare organizations in the Land of Enchantment, and they founded Watermelon Mountain Ranch.</p> <p>“Sandoval County is one of the largest counties in New Mexico, and also one of the poorest,” says Sara. “Much of the population is not able to afford proper vet care for their animals. Mobile spay and neuter services that can visit the townships and pueblos are greatly needed, as well as low-cost programs that can access these rural areas.” </p> <h2>Sophia and Lee Set out to Meet These Needs</h2> <p>The DiClementes took out a loan to purchase a 10-acre facility to set up the shelter. They launched mobile spay/neuter and low-cost veterinary programs.</p> <p>Then, using their child and animal welfare experience, they began setting up programs that benefit people as well as pets. Their Juvenile Justice Program brings troubled teens to WMR to help care for the rescue animals; nine out of 10 teens who do this as part of their community service return to WMR as volunteers. “They find a peace working with the animals they may not find in their own lives,” says Sara.</p> <p>Molly’s Mercy Missions, named for Miss Molly, rescues animals at the highest risk of not beig adopted through other shelters. There are many more programs, and WMR must be doing something right: Since their start, they’ve placed over 150,000 animals in forever homes.</p> <h2>PetSmart Charities Grant Provides Needed Funding</h2> <p>Two of those pets belong to Dave Foxley, a PetSmart District Leader in New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.</p> <p>“Knowing Watermelon Mountain Ranch fights so hard to ensure that every pet finds a home makes you push that much harder to be part of the effort,” says Dave, who was on the team that nominated WMR for a <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a>. “Knowing that we’re emptying kennels and helping their cause makes our adoption events that much more important.</p> <p>“And each time I visit them, I’m reminded of how much they need partners like PetSmart, and donations—their facilities are lean, and their tenants are hungry!”</p> <h2>As Long as It Takes</h2> <p>WMR stands by the pets they rescue for as long as it takes to find them a home—and in some cases, that’s a mighty long time.</p> <p>“Bali is a dog that wouldn't last long in a traditional shelter,” says Sara. “He’s a 9-year-old German Shepherd mix who wants to be an only child. That’s a hard placement around here. He came to us in October of 2014; that means he’s spent 1,500 days hoping for a family to come take him home. We know they’re out there. We won’t give up on him.”</p> <p>For Sophia, Lee, Sara, and everyone at Watermelon Mountain Ranch, helping one animal is just the start of doing so much good for so many.</p> <p>“We’re not only helping pets find homes, we’re helping people find a new family member,” says Dave. “There’s nothing cooler than seeing a family embrace a new dog or cat when heading out of an adoption event.”</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-address field--type-address field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item"><p class="address" translate="no"><span class="administrative-area">NM</span><br> <span class="country">United States</span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awo-content field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">AWO Content</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-article-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Article Type</div> <div class="field__item">Blog Post</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-migrated-former-nid field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Former NID</div> <div class="field__item">14013</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-teaser-image field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Teaser Image</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/WMR%20Bali.jpeg" width="420" height="280" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/WMR%20Bambi.jpeg" width="463" height="617" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <section class="col col-lg-6 offset-lg-3 col-12 field field--name-field-leave-a-response field--type-comment field--label-above comment-wrapper"> <h3 class='title comment-form__title'>Leave a response</h3> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11357&amp;2=field_leave_a_response&amp;3=comment" token="wzCQXysEEfjnYRnhbVbOzV27hMfKyI6RbqjlMC4Xo5U"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact" hreflang="en">community impact</a></div> Thu, 14 Feb 2019 07:00:00 +0000 Petsmart Charities Staff Writer 11357 at https://petsmartcharities.org Valley Oak SPCA https://petsmartcharities.org/blog/valley-oak-spca <span property="schema:name" class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Valley Oak SPCA</span> <div class="field field--name-field-publication-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-14T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <span rel="schema:author" class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="https://petsmartcharities.org/user/113" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="Petsmart Charities Staff Writer">Petsmart Chari…</span></span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2019-02-14T07:00:00+00:00" class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 02:00</span> sserwa<div class="article__body row"> <div class="col col-12 col-md-2 col-lg-1 offset-lg-2 article__body__share-col"> <div class="article__body__share"> <div class="article__body__share__circle"> <div class="js-social--lightbox"> <img src="/themes/custom_theme/images/png/share@2x.png" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col col-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6"> <p>When Ryker came to the <a href="http://www.vospca.org/">Valley Oak SPCA</a>, he was starving. According to executive director Lydia House, it was obvious to the staff and volunteers that he had a hard life.</p> <p>“He was found emaciated, in an area known for gang violence and dogfighting,” House said.</p> <p>His body was covered in punctures and sores. Extremely anemic, he was weak and had a tick-borne disease known as ehrlichia. All in all, he was a sad sight.</p> <p>But thanks to the loving care at Valley Oak SPCA, Ryker became a new dog.</p> <h2>A New Chance at Life</h2> <p>“Ryker went through months of surgeries and treatments to heal his injuries and illnesses and bring him to a healthy weight,” House said.  “After he was fully healed and rehabilitated, he was adopted out to a loving home with the perfect canine brother to play with.”</p> <p>Valley Oak SPCA is full of stories like Ryker’s, which is why there were selected as a recipient of a <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a>.</p> <p>A pet rescue dedicated to finding loving homes for all, it also operates a low-cost veterinary clinic in California’s Central Valley. Their mission is focused on providing shelter, adoption services, low-cost veterinary care, and community education to eliminate the suffering of animals.</p> <h2>Adequate Funding Is a Challenge</h2> <p>But like many shelters, Valley Oak SPCA faces significant challenges.</p> <p>“One of Valley Oak SPCA’s highest expenses is medical supply costs,” said House.  “Offering high-quality, high-quantity surgeries at a low cost is challenging, because medical supplies and equipment are quite expensive. We strive to keep our prices affordable, and so we work hard to supplement our expenses with donations and grants.” </p> <p>Grants from organizations like PetSmart Charities are essential to the shelter’s operations. The grant will be used to help spread the word about the organization’s great work.</p> <p>“The PetSmart Field Grant enabled us to create and print informational brochures about our organization’s mission and services,” said House. “The colorful, professional brochures are available to the public at our clinic and adoption center as well at all of our adoption events and fundraisers.”</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/article_image/public/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG?itok=9Pm1cWf3 1x, /sites/default/files/styles/article_image_2x/public/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG?itok=V8VQbocf 2x" media="(min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/article_image_mobile/public/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG?itok=cpNWSHCB 1x, /sites/default/files/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG 2x" media="(min-width: 600px) and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/article_image_mobile_xs/public/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG?itok=gaQSKp2a 1x, /sites/default/files/styles/article_image_mobile_2x/public/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG?itok=slAT8990 2x" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img property="schema:image" src="/sites/default/files/2019-02/RykerAfter.JPG" alt="Ryker" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </picture> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-address field--type-address field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item"><p class="address" translate="no"><span class="administrative-area">CA</span><br> <span class="country">United States</span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awo-content field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">AWO Content</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-article-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Article Type</div> <div class="field__item">Blog Post</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-migrated-former-nid field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Former NID</div> <div class="field__item">14012</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-teaser-image field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Teaser Image</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Adoption%20Event.jpg" width="960" height="720" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Ryker%20after.JPG" width="4032" height="3024" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Ryker%20before.JPG" width="720" height="540" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <section class="col col-lg-6 offset-lg-3 col-12 field field--name-field-leave-a-response field--type-comment field--label-above comment-wrapper"> <h3 class='title comment-form__title'>Leave a response</h3> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11358&amp;2=field_leave_a_response&amp;3=comment" token="S9k0m0WnJabHiFfm63IIZQ2C2aDl0lL9KNF7EZuyXVc"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact" hreflang="en">community impact</a></div> Thu, 14 Feb 2019 07:00:00 +0000 Petsmart Charities Staff Writer 11358 at https://petsmartcharities.org Thanks to Spay and Neuter Kansas City, Pet Overpopulation Drops in the Heart of America https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact/thanks-to-spay-and-neuter-kansas-city-pet-overpopulation-drops-in-the-heart-of-america <span property="schema:name" class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Thanks to Spay and Neuter Kansas City, Pet Overpopulation Drops in the Heart of America</span> <div class="field field--name-field-publication-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-14T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Thu, 02/14/2019 - At PetSmart Charities, we believe the best way to stop the tide of animal homelessness is to spay and neuter pets. That’s why PetSmart is proud to have chosen <a href="https://snkc.net/">Spay and Neuter Kansas City</a> to receive a <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a>.</p> <p>For David Michael, district lead with PetSmart, selecting Spay and Neuter Kansas City was an obvious choice.</p> <p>“Spay and Neuter Kansas City is a wonderful community resource for pet owners and local animal welfare organizations,” Michael says. “They work to keep pets and their families together through education, wellness services, and resources. They offer low-cost spay and neuter, food assistance and education, among other services.”</p> <h2>This Life-Changing Work Began With a Vision</h2> <p>It all started with founder Michelle Rivera, who worked at a local animal shelter and became dismayed at the sheer number of homeless animals.</p> <p>According to Scott Cotter, Spay and Neuter Kansas City’s director of marketing, it was a life-changing experience for Rivera.</p> <p>“She began by working with local vets to hold weekend, high-volume clinics,” Cotter said. “From that modest beginning, we’ve grown to help over 25,000 pets and their people in a variety of ways every year. In that time we’ve also fixed close to 120,000 animals, which has resulted in a dramatic drop in shelter intakes.</p> <p>“It also makes it possible for our shelters to take animals from other communities when they have overpopulation problems or disasters.”</p> <p>One of the most difficult problems the organization faces is fundraising. Providing spay and neuter services is expensive. The PetSmart Charities grant will help the organization buy supplies and rescue animals in need of new homes.</p> <p>With PetSmart Charities’ help, Spay and Neuter Kansas City can continue its fight against pet overpopulation. </p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-address field--type-address field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item"><p class="address" translate="no"><span class="locality">Kansas City</span>, <span class="administrative-area">KS</span> <span class="postal-code">66109</span><br> <span class="country">United States</span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awo-content field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">AWO Content</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-article-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Article Type</div> <div class="field__item">Blog Post</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-migrated-former-nid field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Former NID</div> <div class="field__item">14011</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-teaser-image field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Teaser Image</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/luna-rescue-and-new-owner.jpg" width="3533" height="3231" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Providing%20dog%20houses%20is%20a%20game%20changer.JPG" width="6000" height="3376" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/We%20see%20the%20love%20every%20day%20at%20our%20pet%20support%20center..JPG" width="6000" height="3376" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <section class="col col-lg-6 offset-lg-3 col-12 field field--name-field-leave-a-response field--type-comment field--label-above comment-wrapper"> <h3 class='title comment-form__title'>Leave a response</h3> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11359&amp;2=field_leave_a_response&amp;3=comment" token="kEorp8pQhpO9RYU71lmybaxSOyHO_0ty1KrVDuGrrwA"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact" hreflang="en">community impact</a></div> Thu, 14 Feb 2019 07:00:00 +0000 Petsmart Charities Staff Writer 11359 at https://petsmartcharities.org Soul Dog Rescue Helps People and Pets on Colorado’s Native American Reservations https://petsmartcharities.org/blog/soul-dog-rescue-helps-people-and-pets-on-colorado-s-native-american-reservations <span property="schema:name" class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Soul Dog Rescue Helps People and Pets on Colorado’s Native American Reservations</span> <div class="field field--name-field-publication-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-14T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <span rel="schema:author" class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="https://petsmartcharities.org/user/113" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="Petsmart Charities Staff Writer">Petsmart Chari…</span></span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2019-02-14T07:00:00+00:00" class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 02:00</span> sserwa<div class="article__body row"> <div class="col col-12 col-md-2 col-lg-1 offset-lg-2 article__body__share-col"> <div class="article__body__share"> <div class="article__body__share__circle"> <div class="js-social--lightbox"> <img src="/themes/custom_theme/images/png/share@2x.png" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col col-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6"> <p>Real life on a Native American reservation can be harsh. “At times, it’s hard enough for the people to survive, let alone take care of their animals,” says Shelby Davis, founder of <a href="http://souldog.org/">Soul Dog Rescue</a>.</p> <p>Shelby first became aware of the extreme challenges of life on the reservation when she was working with large national animal rescue organizations. A friend who lived near the Navajo, Hopi, and Ute Mountain tribal reservations in Colorado told Shelby there were no animal clinics in these areas.</p> <p>“To the native people who live there, animals are often more than companions,” says Shelby. “They help them with their herds. There are high crime rates in these poverty-stricken areas, and dogs help keep the people safe.” Cats also help with pest control.</p> <p>These animals are a vital part of reservation life, but residents of the Colorado reservations had no access to animal care.</p> <p>That’s when Shelby went from working with the big rescue groups to putting all her energy into one small organization: Soul Dog Rescue, which she founded nine years ago. She and her team of volunteers offer free spay and neuter programs, vaccinations, and basic veterinary care to animals on the reservations.</p> <h2>Group Offers Much-Needed Services</h2> <p>The animal rescue initially focused on stopping unwanted litters before they happen. Gradually, Soul Dog added adoptions to their services as well.</p> <p>Donations and grants (such as the recent <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a>) have allowed Soul Dog to expand from one clinic to multiple locations and to offer spay and neuter services free of charge.</p> <p>“People will still give a donation,” Shelby says. “Some go above and beyond the $10 or $15 we request, if they can. Others bring food to the shelter as a way to say thank you. They are amazing. They want to help their animals and take the best care of them possible.”</p> <h2>‘Just Find One Area and Start’</h2> <p>Shelby admits that the amount of work to be done is huge, and they’re just one small organization.</p> <p>“But there are so many moments that keep us all going,” she says. “People tell us they’re so happy to see fewer dead dogs on side of road. Millions of pets are abandoned, surrendered, or neglected each year. That’s why it’s so important to support animal rescues that make a difference.</p> <p>In Connecticut, <a href="http://packleadersrescue.com/">Pack Leaders Rescue</a> was selected to receive a <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a>. According to Tori Cateni, executive director of Pack Leaders Rescue, the grant will empower them to do more good work.</p> <p>“Our mission is to save the lives of dogs and cats, both locally and from the South, that have been abandoned, abused, or neglected,” she says. “We prepare them for a forever home through the three branches of our organization.”</p> <h2>Will Travel for Pets in Need</h2> <p>What sets Pack Leader Rescue apart from other organizations is their willingness and ability to travel across state lines to help pets in need.</p> <p>“Our transport service and behavioral training program allow us to rescue, evaluate, and rehabilitate animals, and we place these animals into forever homes through our rescue program,” says Cateni.</p> <p>With the support of companies like PetSmart, Pack Leaders Rescue was able to add a transport vehicle to its resources.</p> <p>“We have saved over 500 more animals this year alone with the new transport vehicle and donations,” says Cateni. “We have been able to travel to Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee almost weekly.”</p> <h2>Expanding Efforts to Save More Lives</h2> <p>The grant will be used to expand their efforts further south.</p> <p>“We are looking to create another transport RV vehicle to go to Georgia and Florida to save animals weekly from Kill Shelters,” says Cateni.</p> <p>The hurricane season placed a huge burden on the rescue. They took in 37 cats from Myrtle Beach before the hurricane hit. They all needed veterinary care, but there was no time to get to them all before the hurricane made landfall. Instead, they were brought north and vetted in Connecticut. Thanks to the transport vehicles, those cats will go to their forever homes.</p> <p>“We have been so blessed to partner with Petsmart,” says Cateni.</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-address field--type-address field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item"><p class="address" translate="no"><span class="locality">East Hartford</span>, <span class="administrative-area">CT</span> <span class="postal-code">06108</span><br> <span class="country">United States</span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awo-content field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">AWO Content</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-article-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Article Type</div> <div class="field__item">Blog Post</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-migrated-former-nid field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Former NID</div> <div class="field__item">14009</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-teaser-image field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Teaser Image</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/20180729_132927.jpg" width="4032" height="3024" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/47322841_2314571278614448_8373562141151592448_n.jpg" width="718" height="960" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/47377700_2316363908435185_6687576671886770176_n.jpg" width="960" height="653" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <section class="col col-lg-6 offset-lg-3 col-12 field field--name-field-leave-a-response field--type-comment field--label-above comment-wrapper"> <h3 class='title comment-form__title'>Leave a response</h3> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11361&amp;2=field_leave_a_response&amp;3=comment" token="VhNjBFfq2mrwugUsYVjEqdVOdzdEvS_9inAhFE-r6jg"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact" hreflang="en">community impact</a></div> Thu, 14 Feb 2019 07:00:00 +0000 Petsmart Charities Staff Writer 11361 at https://petsmartcharities.org Muddy Paws Animal Rescue: Here’s to Second Chances https://petsmartcharities.org/blog/muddy-paws-animal-rescue-here-s-to-second-chances <span property="schema:name" class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Muddy Paws Animal Rescue: Here’s to Second Chances</span> <div class="field field--name-field-publication-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-14T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <span rel="schema:author" class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="https://petsmartcharities.org/user/113" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="Petsmart Charities Staff Writer">Petsmart Chari…</span></span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2019-02-14T07:00:00+00:00" class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Thu, 02/14/2019 - 02:00</span> sserwa<div class="article__body row"> <div class="col col-12 col-md-2 col-lg-1 offset-lg-2 article__body__share-col"> <div class="article__body__share"> <div class="article__body__share__circle"> <div class="js-social--lightbox"> <img src="/themes/custom_theme/images/png/share@2x.png" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col col-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6"> <p>If you ever daydreamed about how much better things would be if you ran them, you’re a lot like Terri Larson. “I’d worked with many animal rescue organizations,” she says, “and I’d think, wouldn’t it be great if there was a rescue that did this, or that?”</p> <p>So she started one—<a href="https://www.muddypawssecondchancerescue.com/about-us">Muddy Paws Second Chance Animal Rescue</a>, which serves both Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska.</p> <h2>Offering Positive Reinforcement Training, Veterinary Assistance</h2> <p>Terri’s “rule the world” wish list wasn’t too crazy. For one thing, she wanted a rescue that would train dogs that might otherwise be surrendered due to behavioral issues.</p> <p>“I get so many calls about dogs pulling too hard on the leash, or a toddler starts walking and the family dog gets nervous,” Terri says. “We do positive reinforcement training in the home, so the family doesn’t have to surrender the pet.”</p> <p>Muddy Paws success rate speaks for itself: They worked with 60 dogs last year, and 80 percent of them were able to stay in their homes.</p> <p>Another item on Terri’s wish list: helping pet owners who can’t afford surgery for their animals. “Some rescue organizations will get your pet the help it needs, but they ask that you surrender your pet,” Terri explains. Muddy Paws offers that veterinary assistance, and the family and pet stay together.</p> <h2>Funding Is Vital</h2> <p>Muddy Paws receives much-needed donations to assist with operational costs, and a recent <a href="https://www.petsmartcharities.org/pro/grants">PetSmart Charities grant</a> will help pets get the medical care they need.</p> <p>“We take a lot of animals other rescues won’t, because of medical issues,” says Terri. “That grant money allowed us to fully vet over 40 dogs. That’s huge.”</p> <p>Muddy Paws was also able to drive a truck full of food and pet supplies to neighborhoods in Texas following Hurricane Harvey. “PetSmart posted about it online, made collections, and helped us fill a 28-foot truck with what we needed,” Terri says. “I can’t believe the support we get from PetSmart.”</p> <p>Today, Terri’s daydream is a foster-based shelter operation that includes 250 volunteers, 80 people making rescue runs, about 100 dogs in loving foster homes, and even one re-homed duck to their credit.</p> <p>“I just had the idea,” says Terri. “It’s not me. It’s the wonderful volunteers and the amazing support we get. Almost every day I see something happen that makes me say, ‘Someone’s watching over us.’ It truly is a miracle.”</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-address field--type-address field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Address</div> <div class="field__item"><p class="address" translate="no"><span class="administrative-area">NE</span><br> <span class="country">United States</span></p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awo-content field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">AWO Content</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-article-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Article Type</div> <div class="field__item">Blog Post</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-migrated-former-nid field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Migrated Former NID</div> <div class="field__item">14008</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-teaser-image field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Teaser Image</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Muddy%20Paws%20Buddy.jpg" width="960" height="720" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> <div class="field__item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/images/Muddy%20Paws%20Torrey.jpg" width="702" height="742" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <section class="col col-lg-6 offset-lg-3 col-12 field field--name-field-leave-a-response field--type-comment field--label-above comment-wrapper"> <h3 class='title comment-form__title'>Leave a response</h3> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=11362&amp;2=field_leave_a_response&amp;3=comment" token="8O4Dp4vj4Uc8XCiy2WqaPiQ1CPVYtHIQdCqIZ_qOjp4"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><a href="https://petsmartcharities.org/our-stories/community-impact" hreflang="en">community impact</a></div> Thu, 14 Feb 2019 07:00:00 +0000 Petsmart Charities Staff Writer 11362 at https://petsmartcharities.org
