In fact, 68 percent of U.S. households, or about 85 million families own a pet, according to the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), which is up from 56 percent of U.S. households in 1988, the first year the survey was conducted.

PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare, advocates for the many benefits the human-animal relationship offers both children and adults. During PetSmart Charities' National Adoption Weekend Sept. 13-15, potential adoptees are encouraged to consider how adopting a pet could benefit the entire family or even a classroom.

According to the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), a nonprofit industry research and education group, research demonstrates the positive influence pets have on a child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.

Classroom pets improve students’ attitudes toward school and have facilitated students learning lessons in responsibility, respect and empathy

Scientific research has demonstrated the positive impact of early exposure to pets on the development of allergies and asthma later in life

For children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) the presence of companion animals improved positive social behaviors, including becoming more receptive to social advances from peers

“As a parent, I’ve seen the abundant benefits owning a pet can have on a child’s development both mentally and emotionally,” said Amanda Landis-Hanna, DVM, senior manager of veterinary outreach at PetSmart Charities. “Pets help teach children compassion, empathy and respect for all living things. They’ve also been shown to reduce stress levels, especially in children with special needs.”

PetSmart Charities is doing its part to strengthen this bond, providing grants supporting nearly 4,000 animal welfare organizations across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico to provide shelter, socialization and veterinary care to homeless pets to prepare them for adoption. Chihuahua Who Has Become the 300,000th
Pet Adopted at a PetSmart Store in Canada

Wednesday, June 26, 2019—BURLINGTON, ON—Meet Ellie. She’s a senior rescue pup who recently became the 300,000th pet in Canada to find a forever home through PetSmart’s in-store adoption program. Since opening its doors in Canada in 1999, PetSmart has never sold cats or dogs in its stores. Instead, the pet retailer established PetSmart Charities of Canada; a Canadian charity that partners with more than 200 local humane societies, SPCAs and rescues, to help shelter pets find adoptive homes and families. The pet that marked this milestone of 300,000 adoptions is a one-eyed Chihuahua with a rescue story for the ages.

“Blink” was the name that was first given to Ellie when a southern California shelter took her in as a stray. She was very nervous and shy, but she had clearly received some veterinary care in the past due to the stitches where her left eye used to be. The shelter thought Blink’s pet parent would soon come to claim her, but as time went on, no one appeared to be missing her. Blink’s stay at the shelter was getting longer and longer and her anxiety didn’t seem to be subsiding.

Shelters in California often struggle with a very high number of stray and homeless dogs, meaning that if dogs are not adopted quickly, or if they need more time to recover, overcrowded shelters can run out of space. Conversely, in Canada, there often aren’t enough adoptable dogs available for people wanting to give a pet the second chance they deserve.

That’s where rescues like Embrace a Discarded Animal Society come in. Leslie Fee, the founder of the organization, has been rescuing and transporting dogs from overcrowded shelters in the U.S. since 2012. Her organization, a registered Canadian charity based in Abbotsford, B.C., has received just over $100,000 in grants from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help cover the costs associated with transporting pets and providing the veterinary care they may need before being ready for adoption.

When we learn about dogs who are having trouble finding homes, or ones that are at risk due to being in an over-capacity shelter, those are the first ones we want to help, says Fee. Dogs are remarkably resilient. They just need time and space to rest, recover and learn to trust again. And that’s exactly what we offer them.

When Fee receives a call from an overcrowded shelter in California, she and her team will fire up one of their motorhomes that are equipped with air-conditioning, heaters and running water, and make the drive to California. Pets are safely and comfortably transported back to their ten-acre rescue ranch in Blaine, WA., which is right on the border of B.C.. Pets may stay at the ranch for a few weeks or a few years depending on what they have experienced, the veterinary care they require and how long it takes for them to feel healthy, happy and confident.

Blink spent just over a month at Embrace’s rescue ranch and soon she was one of the friendliest pups at the rescue. “We’d all developed such a soft spot in our hearts for her. Due to the scarring on her face and her missing eye, we think she suffered a dog bite at some point in her life. Despite that experience, she’s turned out to be so calm and trusting, she just loves to be held. That’s how we knew it was time to find Blink her forever home,” Fee concludes.

Fee first brought Blink to an adoption event at the PetSmart in White Rock, B.C. where she met Hanne Olsen—a woman whose beloved Chihuahua named Gidget had recently passed away. While Hanne was quite taken with Blink, she wasn’t sure if she was ready to adopt again so soon. She left the adoption event without Blink but found she couldn’t get the pint-sized pup out of her mind.

“When I got home, I just couldn’t stop thinking about her sweet face and what she must have gone through in her life. In a matter of moments, not only had I decided I wanted to adopt Blink, but I also knew that her name would now be Ellie—after Elle Driver from the Quentin Tarantino movie Kill Bill,” laughs Olsen. “She too, was missing one eye! She was also strong and resilient.”

One of Hanne’s neighbours was a volunteer with Embrace a Discarded Animal Society, so she knocked on her door and asked for Fee’s phone number. She called right away to see if Blink/Ellie was still available for adoption, and thankfully she was. After filling out an adoption application and completing a home visit, Hanne was delighted to hear that she could pick up Ellie at Embrace’s next adoption event in Abbotsford, B.C.

When Hanne arrived, she found out this was a very special adoption indeed—the 300,000th adoption that had happened in a PetSmart store in Canada. Ellie and Hanne were presented with a gift basket overflowing with everything Ellie could possibly need to settle into her new home in Canada.

"While Ellie may have been the 300,000th pet adopted in our Canadian stores, it’s important to remember that pet adoptions happen each and every day, says Alan Blundell, president of PetSmart Canada and chair of the board at PetSmart Charities of Canada. Every pet rescue from as far east as Newfoundland to as far west as Vancouver Island, paired with every Canadian that approaches a pet in need with an open heart and an open home has helped us to reach this milestone, and as we celebrate Canada Day, we are thankful to all of them."

About PetSmart Charities® of Canada
PetSmart® Charities of Canada is committed to finding lifelong, loving homes for all pets by supporting programs and thought leadership that bring people and pets together. to understanding why they may need to fill out an adoption application and questionnaire; and learning how to make a new pet feel right at home. These are just a few common inquiries potential pet adopters have and they’re part of the reason why PetSmart has placed an Adoption Ambassador in more than 1,600 stores across North America.

Adoption Ambassadors are PetSmart associates who receive specialized training to become experts on PetSmart Charities’ In-Store Adoption Program. They can help explain the adoption application process, introduce adopters to a representative from one of the nearly 4,000 animal welfare organizations bringing adoptable pets into PetSmart stores, and provide guidance on how to integrate a new pet into the family. They’re also passionate about PetSmart Charities and can explain how PetSmart and its non-profit partner have worked together for 25 years to find loving homes for 8.4 million pets and counting.

Deborah Turcott, acting president of PetSmart Charities explains why the in-store adoption program continues to be so successful. “As the leading funder of animal welfare, PetSmart Charities provides grants to support nearly 4,000 animal welfare organizations across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. In turn, those organizations provide shelter, socialization and veterinary care to homeless pets to prepare them for adoption. When ready, those adoptable pets are transported to a nearby PetSmart store where they have exposure to millions of pet-lovers. It’s a collaborative partnership based on our shared mission to bring people and pets together.”

On Feb. 22 – 24, PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekend will take place in just about every PetSmart store across the continent. Tens of thousands of puppies and dogs, kittens and cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and other furry, scaly and even a few feathered friends from local shelters will be looking to be adopted into a loving home. In most cases, adopters are able to take their new pet home the very same day they meet them, but in some cases, a home visit may be required to help ensure the new pet and pet parent will be happy together for years to come.

When thinking of adopting a pet, pop into a local PetSmart store during PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekend. It’s a great way to meet adoptable pets from the local community. The team of knowledgeable animal welfare partners and Adoption Ambassadors can help match potential adopters with the perfect furry, scaly or feathered friend. Preview adoptable pets by following PetSmart Charities on Twitter and Instagram during National Adoption Weekend when the charity will host a social media adopt-a-thon on Sat., Feb. 23 and Sun., Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. EST.

PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekend Details:
Dates: Fri., Feb. 22 – Sun., Feb. 24, 2019
Times: Fri. and Sat.: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. & Sun.: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. local time
Locations: Nearly every one of the 1,600+ PetSmart stores across North America. Ultimately, the facility will serve as a recovery space for both MASH Unit animals and incarcerated individuals detained in the Maricopa County jail system. It is expected to open by May 2022.

The MASH Unit was originally created to care for abused and neglected animals seized in investigations. The program, which has operated for nearly 20 years, focuses on rehabilitation for both recovered animals and inmates facilitated through the human-animal bond. Nonviolent, female inmates participate in a pet care and training certificate program that fosters compassion and patience and helps the animals rebuild trust in preparation for adoption.

To date, more than 660 inmates have graduated from the MASH program and thousands of rehabilitated pets have found forever homes through adoption.

The MASH Unit’s current location, Maricopa County’s First Avenue Jail facility, was decommissioned from human use due to habitability concerns and plumbing issues in the mid-1990s. To ensure the new facility meets the needs of both people and pets, MCSO and PetSmart Charities consulted with animal welfare experts and commissioned a feasibility study to determine the impact the connected space will have on all inhabitants. The new facility will also be better equipped to house abused animals, who are held as evidence in investigations and typically require an extended length of stay, to ensure they are properly rehabilitated before being matched with a family.

MCSO intends for the new facility to be a significant step toward using evidence-based programs to achieve the MASH Unit’s long-term goals of reducing recidivism and reshaping lives of both inmates and animals.

“Our MASH program benefits animals, humans, and our community at large,” said Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone. “Numerous studies have demonstrated the impact that the human-animal bond has on stress levels and fostering compassion. This new facility will enable us to expand MASH to include engagement and responsibility for our inmate population, including incarcerated mothers and their children, veterans, juveniles, and those with substance use disorders. Our goal is to reduce recidivism, while finding loving homes for the vulnerable animals we must lawfully care for. Ultimately, we believe this program will serve the needs of our animal population, save taxpayer dollars, and make our County an even better place to live and work. We are grateful to PetSmart Charities for its role in this innovative public-private partnership. “

“PetSmart Charities is dedicated to supporting programs that celebrate the relationship between people and pets and the positive effects pets have on our lives,” said Deborah Turcott, acting president of PetSmart Charities. “The MASH Unit can have a transformative effect on inmates and their rehabilitation, while also helping abused animals rebuild their trust in people; allowing both to leave the program for a better, more successful life. We are proud to support the new MASH facility, as the program aligns with our core values of helping pets in need and helping all pets find a lifelong, loving home.”

For more information on MCSO, please visit www.MCSO.org. For more information on PetSmart Charities and how grants are making an impact across North America, please visit www.PetSmartCharities.org.

###

About MCSO:

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was founded in 1871 and operates in an area nearly the size of Vermont.
