Chase

My story

This beautiful boy is Chase. He came to us from the county shelter where he was e-listed for stress. His notes told us that he was originally surrendered by an owner who had him for a year after finding him as a stray. It was unclear why they chose to surrender him when they did. Luckily, Chase joined us in rescue and was sent to a foster home where we were able to learn more about him! Right now he is currently in boarding so we’d love to get him into another foster home or even better, adopted! Chase is described as an affectionate, playful, medium-energy boy who is truly very sweet the majority of the time. He loves his people, enjoys cuddling, and taking treats such as cheese or peanut butter! Chase has shown zero desire to escape from a backyard but he is quite skilled at slipping out of a collar or harness when leaving the home. While he doesn’t try to run off, this can still be a safety concern, so secure handling and properly fitted equipment will be needed. Chase also isn’t particularly interested in walks and may stop abruptly or refuse to go any farther so he’s perfectly content spending time with his people at home. Chase will need a supportive, patient adopter as he adjusts inside his future home. He can become reactive around food and may also guard random items he gets ahold of. When he’s already escalated, touching his neck or collar can cause him to react, so his adopter will need to be comfortable recognizing his warning signs and giving him space rather than trying to physically intervene. Thankfully, he responds well to verbal correction and redirection, and once redirected, he quickly returns to being sweet and affectionate. Additionally, he has exhibited anxiety with certain situations like going through doorways and being kenneled. All these behaviors are manageable though and can be worked through with an experienced adopter who will set him up for success. As a medium-energy dog, Chase could do well in a variety of household types, whether the family is a little more active or more relaxed. He would likely do best in a home with other dogs so he has friends to play with and help to alleviate some anxiety. Since he is still working through triggers and behaviors, he should be placed in a home with older children who understand and respect dog boundaries.
