Purpose of category:
The Adoption Growth grant is designed to support PetSmart Charities Adoption Partners with increasing adoption programs in PetSmart stores that help animals find loving homes. The maximum grant given will be $75,000.
All applications must meet the following criteria:
- Approved and active PetSmart Charities adoption partner
- Compliant with all PetSmart Charities policies, procedures, and reporting requirements
- Ensures all in-store adoptions are processed through AME and conducts adoption reconciliation
- Have completed the minimum required in-store adoptions for Cohort 1 (500+ adoptions) or Cohort 2 (1+ adoptions), respectively.
- Complete the Adoption Accessibility Questionnaire
Note: Following completion of the Adoption Accessibility Questionnaire, you will receive an email confirmation letting you know whether you meet our eligibility criteria. Eligible partners will be invited to a call with their regional Adoptions Grant Manager to learn more about the grant, expectations, and potential fit.
Required steps to apply:
- Step 1: Complete the Adoption Accessibility Questionnaire
- Step 2: Confirm Eligibility and Connect with Your Regional Grants Manager - After completing the Accessibility Questionnaire, you will receive an email confirmation indicating whether your organization meets our eligibility criteria. Eligible partners will then be invited to a call with their regional Adoptions Grant Manager to learn more about the grant opportunity, expectations, and potential fit.
- Step 3: Engage Store Partners: Connect with your store partners to discuss your intent to apply, align on goals, and identify potential opportunities for collaboration or support as part of your application.

Please note: Applicants must complete all three required steps before submitting a grant application. Applications from partners that have not completed these steps may be automatically declined.
Applicants that meet the above criteria should apply in ONE of the following cohorts:
Cohort 1: Accelerating in-store adoptions
- To be eligible to apply, Adoption Partners must have completed 500 adoptions in a PetSmart store in the U.S. or 100 in Canada and Puerto Rico over the last 12 months.
- Preference will be given to groups who illustrate their plan for expanding their current in-store programs or who have a plan for new in-store adoption models to increase adoptions.
Cohort 2: Capacity Building
- To be eligible to apply, Adoption Partners must have completed one adoption in a PetSmart store over the last 12 months. This applies to groups based in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada.
- Preference will be given to groups looking to build a consistent in-store adoption program. This should include a written plan, including examples, on how you plan to sustain the program over time.
Funding may support:
Costs associated with building or enhancing your organization’s adoption program in partnership with PetSmart stores. This may include but is not limited to:
Funding for staff positions to support your organization's in-store adoption program (including events) at PetSmart stores
Marketing/Advertising to support in-store adoptions program
Volunteer or foster support, incentives, and recruitment to support in-store adoption events
Event supplies (containment, enrichment, etc.)
Shelter software and technology needs
Vehicle repairs or transportation to events
Innovative ideas and pilots for partners to try in-store
Other costs associated with facilitating PetSmart adoptions and in-store events.
Please Note: PetSmart Charities Adoption Growth grants do not support the purchase of vehicles, capital campaigns, or veterinary care.
