My story

Meet Aurora! She was found New Year's Eve 2014 - abandoned in a carrier outside a rescuer's home in rural KY. It is amazing that she survived the frigid temperatures. Once the rescuer got her out of the cage, she realized Aurora was born without a tail - a condition known as 'rumpy manx' - and would need more care than she could provide. We offered to help. Aurora was transferred to us in Cleveland. Her rumpy manx condition is like spina bifida in humans - many kittens die from this condition. We were determined to get Aurora healthy. She arrived to us with severe bowel issues, which are typical of rumpy manx kittens. Her condition was so bad that she needed reconstructive surgery of her anus, which we did not hesitate to do. Aurora has healed beautifully and we have found what seems to be the perfect diet and medication use to keep her bowels healthy. Aurora will need to be on this protocol for life - no exceptions. Her mobility is good - though she has the typical "bunny hop" that rumpy manx kitties have. She eats a prescription canned food that costs around $40 per month. She cannot have dry food with her condition! Additionally, she takes Miralax powder laxative with her 3 meals per day. This is the best combo we have found to keep her stools regular and comfortable for her. If she is adopted in a home with other animals, she will need to be fed separately. It is critical that Aurora's adopter understands how important regular vet care is - and ideally has experience with special needs animals and/or rumpy manx felines. In February of 2016, Aurora suffered from a bout of hypoglycemia that left her with seizures and in ICU for a weekend. She has recovered and has not had any seizures or episodes of hypoglycemia since that time. Her vision was affected and has improved though she does still have some issues with depth perception. Aurora is 5 years old - though she is petite likely due to her medical condition. Aurora also had dental surgery in March 2017 that resulted in a few pulled teeth. Her family should plan on regular cleanings. She is playful. She gets along well with other cats in the foster home. Aurora is an absolute delight & deserves a committed family to open their hearts and home to her. She is fostered in Cleveland Hts, OH. MAWL's cats are spayed/neutered, leukemia/FIV-tested, dewormed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines. The cats we offer for adoption are usually the offspring of feral cats or house cats that have been abandoned by their former owners. Unless otherwise noted, our cats are available to inside homes only. We prefer to adopt our animals to residents of Ohio. An adoption donation of $75.00 helps to cover the veterinary fees.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Aurora, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
