My story

This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas, North Central Texas or the southern Oklahoma area. NAME: Mohawk GENDER: Male (neutered) AGE: About 3 years WEIGHT: About 8 pounds DOGS/CATS: Gets along with other small dogs, No with big dogs, Unknown with cats CHILDREN: Recommend All Adult Home, or home with older, mature children (14 and older) Meet Mohawk. Did you know that the style of hair cut that most of us think of when we hear “Mohawk” comes from the Kanien’kehá:ka people. It was, and is, the style worn by the young men charged with protection of the tribe. They used their hair, and the value it represented, to protect their people from the invading forces. This fits this boy perfectly as he is a growing young man who adores his family and wants to love and protect them. In late July, CRT was contacted by a family in Ohio. The husband has recently passed away and the wife was having to move from her home. They had 22 Chihuahuas and all needed to be rehomed. All three CRT regions joined together for a rescue mission the first weekend of August. After hundreds of miles and hours of driving, all 22 Chihuahua were safe in CRT foster homes around the country. Mohawk and his Mom Pakey were two of these dogs. Mohawk is now ready for a forever home, with a few less siblings so he can have more attention! Mohawk is definitely a “people dog”. He adores his foster family. Mohawk is young, and still growing in confidence. He is shy and cautious when he first meets you. We are looking for an experienced family who understands this about young Chihuahuas and will be patient as he grows up. Once Mohawk trusts you, he adores you. He loves to cuddle and stay close to you. He also loves soft fluffy blankets. If you cannot find Mohawk, gently call his name and one of the near by blankets may start moving as he wiggles out to see you! It is adorable. He loves to be petted and hopes you will give him belly rubs daily. Although Mohawk came from a home with 21 other dogs, he is not very interested in interacting with the other small dogs in his foster home. He basically ignores them! He gets along with them, but does not interact much. For this reason we think he will do well as an only dog. Note that he seems to be afraid of larger dogs, so we would not recommend a home with medium or large dogs. Mohawk also does not play with toys much. Mohawk is about 3 years old. He weighs about 8 pounds. Mohawk has a tan coat with white highlights. Mohawk has long legs and is athletic. He is very quiet. We think he would love to be with a family who is home a great deal of the time because of his huge love for people. He is not found of young children (the sudden movements startle him) so we suggest an all adult home or a home with older children. He did show a bit of nervous behavior during the severe storm we had last week, but he snuggled under a blanket with his foster Mom and settled right down. Note he also shows anxiety when getting his nails trimmed, so you may have to have your vet do that for him! Mohawk is athletic and can climb chain link fences, so we recommend a very secure wooden fence for his environment. Mohawk is super smart. He taught himself to use the doggy door in his foster home in a day. He let’s himself outside to go potty. Notice we have noticed a little bit of marking with him, but this is not unusual in a young dog. So we have been having him wear a belly band as a training tool. His foster parents have been working with him on this and believe he will come around eventually, over time and with patience. We have already seen an improvement. His original home had pee pee pads down for the dogs, so we believe Mohawk is also pee pee pad trained. Mohawk is crate trained and sleeps soundly in his crate over night. Mohawk is being fostered in the DFW area. If this sweet boy sounds like the right fit for your home, our CRT adoption form can be found at HTTP://www.chihuahua-Rescue.com/adoption-application/ Mohawk is neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots, heartworm negative and on heartworm prevention. He is ready to join a loving family, could that family be yours? This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $270.63 adoption donation required ($250 adoption donation and $20.63 Texas Sales Tax). Note: as of 1-1-20, the Texas State Comptroller office is requiring all rescue groups to collect sales tax on adoptions, even though we are all 501c3. We are all fighting this, but for now, have been told it is non-negotiable. As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met. After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog. Please be sure to read about our adoption process and then fill out an adoption application before emailing the contact person.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Mohawk, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
