My story

Hi there, I’m Maya and I think I could be the girl of your dreams. I’m a sassy 66 lb. gorgeous, cashmere soft, 8-year-old English Bulldog and I’ve been deaf since birth – don't worry about communicating though, I’ll let you know when I want something. My foster family has also worked with me to develop a series of signs and taps on my body that help us “talk” with each other and they seem to be working well and I’m improving every day. In addition I have this amazing loving gaze and can communicate with my expressions and will put my full bear claw paw in your lap when I want you to pet me. I am at my happiest sitting in the backyard, strolling the neighborhood or going for a car ride. I love walking – I’m slower than I used to be and have some arthritis in my back legs but that doesn’t stop me. Oh, and I do have to occasionally stop and have a roll around in the grass, a little nap or drink from one of those cool outdoor sprinklers. I love to get my whole head in there and soak it up. My foster family says it’s like a good face pressure wash for me. I am also obsessed with car rides. I am happy to go anywhere you are willing to drive me and I am super well behaved in the car. I either snooze away happily or gaze out the window at the great big world. When my foster family dangles the car keys I make a dash for the backdoor. When I was rescued, I was really struggling with an undiagnosed illness but through amazing doctors and the good folks at CEBR we found out that I have Cushing's disease. I’m on medication for it which I’ll need to take for the rest of my life but the good news is that it’s doing its job and my Cushing's is under control. Check out my gorgeous fluffy white coat. My foster family and my doctors are still trying to figure out one last thing that I’m dealing with but we think we are going to figure it out soon. Because of this I’m still currently wearing a diaper most of the day but stay tuned for exciting updates. I love treats – I can be a little snappy as I’m very eager to eat them but I’ve been working with my foster family on taking them gently and am making real progress. I am also not keen on having my face cleaned and am sensitive about my overall bulldog grooming routine but I am becoming more open as I learn that the good treats get offered when I allow this to happen (I am very food motivated). As a bonus, I do love having my tail pocket cleaned. When I became ill, I started to have separation anxiety probably because I was just feeling so icky all of the time and needed humans near to make me feel safe. As I’ve gotten better my foster family has been working with me on this but I would find it comforting to live in a home where people might be around more. If you’re asking, I’d also like to have a home with fewer stairs as I struggle a little going up and down, especially when I’m tired. To be clear, I can do stairs pretty darn well but I make my Foster Dad carry me upstairs at bedtime – he's a sucker! Are you my forever family? Please send me a note. I’d love to meet you.
