BRYCE aka Ricecake (Manchester Terrier/Dachshund mix) Only $85 adoption!!! My adoption profiles tend to be long & very detailed. Please read the ENTIRE Adoption Profile (all the way to the FAQ) so you understand everything about this dog & if you are a good match for him. If you still have questions after reading the entire profile, PLEASE read the FAQ for your answer instead of e-mailing me the question. Most of the questions are answered there, & I'm not always able to answer all the e-mails. Ricecake ended up at the shelter because his owner was arrested, and no one came to the Shelter to claim him. Their owner was a transient, and we did not get any information from her. But we know that he has lived with other dogs because he came in with 3 other dogs (Pancake, Daffodil, and Iris). While at the shelter, he was fearful & avoidant and that landed him on their list. That is when Safe Haven stepped in. We networked him through our E-list Adoption Program, and found him (what we thought) was a great home. When picking Bryce up from the Shelter, for some unknown reason, the man opened his carrier door out in the open parking lot! Bryce got scared and ran. He was lost for 5 months! Then there was a report of 3 dogs hanging around a industrial lot. It turns out one of them was Ricecake!!! (Ricecake hooked up with 2 little ladies, lol...) I was so relieved! The people at the lot had been feeding him, and even put out a dog house for him. So after 5 months of being on the streets, he was ok! He was actually a little over weight, lol! It only took a few days for him to warm up to me once he got here. He is also super smart and learned the routine fast. Bryce is very food motivated, and he LOVES to do training sessions! He knows sit, stay, come, inside, and outside. Explained more below... So he was adopted out again to a lady that returned him 7 months later saying he was guarding her from other people and had bitten (he NEVER acted that way around me!). She went on to explain that she is not one for disciplining or setting rules (which is not what she told me when applying for him). If you don't set rules and guidelines, for some dogs, they will feel like they have to take over. Dogs don't want this job, and they are not good at it. So it stresses them out, and they act out because of it. This is why he acted out at her house. When he came back here, he had some bad habits that he had learned while he was away, so we had to work on all of those. He also now shows signs of having been hit. The previous adopter said her brother took Bryce because "He knows how to handle a dog like him". And she said other red flag words like my brother is the "Pack leader", and "Alpha", and other macho crap like that...So I believe it was him who hit Bryce. I am 100% convinced he was hit because after he was returned, he would cower down and visibly shake at the smallest things thinking he was in trouble (which he was not...). He was never like that before, and it took awhile to show him that he is safe here. There should be a happy medium when working with a dog. Going overboard and hitting or kicking a dog is not only cruel, but it will break any trust you have with them. You need trust to be able to work with a dog. Not setting rules and guidelines with a consistent is also bad and will make a dog feel insecure and nervous and think that they have to step up and be in charge, because you know, SOMEBODY has to! Dogs do best with a happy medium by setting rules and guidelines, gently correcting them when they do something that you don't want and steering them towards what you do want. I like to train with positive reinforcement and make it fun. If there is ever any behavior that you don't know what to do with, ASK ME. I am here for advice and guidance for the lifetime of each of the pets I adopt out. I want to make sure you both live happily ever after! If you are looking for a complete goofball, he is your guy! This little man is a joy and will keep you laughing! He needs a quiet home with someone that will set a consistent schedule, rules and guidelines. I can go over what to do if they don't listen at the meeting... ESTIMATED BIRTHDAY: 5/25/18 WEIGHT AT LAST VET VISIT: He was 18 lbs. when I rescued him. Then this adorable little tub of butter was a whopping 25 lbs. when returned to me! He had fat rolls all over! Some people may think that that's cute, but it is very bad for their health and they can get arthritis, cancer, diabetes, etc... from being overweight. He has lost quite a bit of that since being back here. CATS: I am not sure. He initially barked at them from his crate, but then stopped that. I don't remember if I ever got farther in testing him with them. I don't currently have any cats here that I can test him with... SMALL DOGS: Fantastic with other small dogs! He is very friendly and upfront with them. He will go right up to them without any hesitation & wants to play. He now makes noises when he plays. I am assuming he learned that at the previous adopters' brothers' house... It sounds horrible when he does it, but he is just excited. He also grabs the backs of other dogs' necks now when playing, but I don't like that type of play, and he listens when I tell him "No". He is great with Bow! Bow is not completely confident, but they are a great pair together and I think they would help each other adjust if someone would be interested in adopting them together. Since he's so social with the other small dogs, I want him to at least go a home with another small dog that is friendly and social that can be a role model to Bryce. LARGE DOGS: He is more nervous around medium & large dogs. Sometimes he will bark & be defensive when around new ones. This may be because he had to defend himself against larger dogs or coyotes when he was lost. I have been working with him to get him used to larger dogs, and he is better, but is selective with which ones he likes. I prefer he does not go to a home with larger dogs. I don't want him to be uncomfortable in anyway. KIDS: I originally said that I wasn't sure how he was around kids, but seeing his personality, I thought this little goofball would probably be great with kids. The previous adopter said that he wasn't good with anyone that came to her house, but that he was fine with everyone at her brothers and that his kids loved Bryce. MEN: When he was at my house before, he was shy around men he didn't know, but friendly and loving once he got to know them. Treats help him warm up! I have not tested him since he was returned, and he may take longer to warm up to men after what he went through with the adopters' brother. WOMAN: Affectionate & wants to be with you. Gives kisses. STRANGERS: (this means you!) He can be hesitant at first, but warms up with treats. If someone comes to my house, he typically would stand off in a corner and observe until he got comfortable. When we were out at the park or walking, and a stranger came up, he would stand behind me (because he trusts me and knows I would protect him). FOOD: He is currently on: https://www.chewy.com/blue-buffalo-wilderness-small-breed/dp/35556?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=f&utm_content=Blue%20Buffalo&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7qP9BRCLARIsABDaZzhI3wOTGlno-2i1FijjL6AXJJeOn-mtKZxeGK1UJJU_YaPt0qhSRf8aAgajEALw_wcB I feed all the dogs on a rotational diet. Which means they get a different brand of high-quality food each month. I do this because I do not think that one brand can provide all the nutrients that they need. Just like one food can't provide us with all that we need...Plus, who wants to eat the same thing every day? All dogs are fed breakfast (7 am) & are fed in their crate with their own bowl. I have a 1/3 cup scoop in the bag of food, and I give him 2 scoops a day. Plus I always add organic coconut oil, parsley, probiotics, and fish oil to his meals. About once a week I cook for them and give them some type of extra goodies. Most often it is cottage cheese, organic pureed pumpkin, or green beans with bone broth or a meat or fish. He's a great eater & has eaten everything I have given him. He actually acts like he is starving all the time. Which could be a result of having to look for food for so long prior to finding the couple at the industrial yard when he was lost. He would NOT be a candidate for free feeding (having a bowl of food out all the time), because he will over eat, which would be bad for his health. CRATE TRAINED: Yes, he will go in when asked ("Inside"). I always give him a treat for doing it. He has been great and has held it every time, so I don't see a need to crate him unless it's to slowly introduce him to any dogs in your home. All my foster dogs are crated at night, and when I leave. He is in a wire crate 25" x 21" . He has not had an accident. He is such a goofball! When I originally had him in a hard plastic crate and was training him to go in, I was trying to get him to go in the crate without throwing a treat in there, and just use hand signals, he would jump on top of the crate & look so pleased with himself, lol. I call him the little circus monkey... Anyways, that's why I switched to a wire one. He is let out multiple times throughout the day, and can hold it through the night. HOUSE TRAINED: He had some accidents when he was first returned, but appears to be house trained now. He is using the doggy door here and knows the word "Outside". I initially couldn't get him to go out in the rain, but when I let another dog out with him, he followed that dog out and did his "business". LEASH TRAINED: Yes, He LOVES going for walks! He should get at least a 20 min walk a day to get all his energy out. CAR: Yes, he rides in the car well. He actually gets excited to go somewhere and can jump all the way up in my truck! OTHER ISSUES: None, he wonderful, he just needs the right home. BASIC TRAINING: All of the pets at Safe Haven receive basic training when they come here. What each pet learns depends on how much time I have had to work with them, & if that pet has any additional issues that need to be focused on first. I specialize in abused and neglected pets, so most are extremely fearful when they first come here. I need to build trust with them FIRST before I can do training sessions with them. Especially learning words like "Sit", "Lay down", etc.....The pets here are always improving though! Common things the dogs are often taught here are house training, go potty (if they're goofing off outside and I need them to do their business, I use those words), outside (to go outside), crate training, inside (to go in the crate), basic house manners, to come when called, scooch (to move out of the way), no, quiet, sit, lay down, stay, ok (command release), wait, this way (when out walking and you change direction). You will usually find more pictures & videos of the pets there too! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1405138936478168/ ADOPTING A CAT OR DOG IS UP TO A 20 YEAR COMMITMENT! THEY ARE NOT OBJECTS THAT YOU CAN GET RID OF WHEN THEY BECOME INCONVENIENT. THEY ARE INNOCENT LIVING, BREATHING ANIMALS WITH FEELINGS THAT DEPEND ON YOU TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO TAKE CARE OF, LOVE, & PAY FOR EVERYTHING THIS PET NEEDS FOR UP TO 20 YEARS, THEN PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN APPLICATION. * Safe Haven STRONGLY believes that collars should only be used as decoration or to hold the ID tag. If you are trying to restrain your dog, it can easily slip out of a collar. Also, attaching a leash to a collar puts pressure on the neck, which is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, & could hurt them. For these reasons, Safe Haven includes a harness with every dog adoption to ensure the safety of the dog. A harness distributes the weight on the chest & shoulders. It also has a handle on the back that you can grab if need be, without hurting your pet (EX: Dog falls off your boat, just grab the handle & pull your pet back in with no harm done. With a collar, you would have to strangle your dog when pulling your dog in). Also, it is very hard for a dog to slip out of a harness when properly fitted. So it is much easier to restrain them. FAQ: Q: Is this pet still available? A: Status of each pet is posted in the original post on the Facebook page for Safe Haven Animal Rescue of AZ at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1405138936478168/ . It will say the status in ALL CAPS at the very top of the pets post, and updates are posted in the comment section of each pets post. Once on the Facebook page, type the pets name in the search box in the upper right corner to easily pull up all the posts on that pet. Q: Why are your adoption fees so low? A: Safe Haven does things very differently than other rescues do. If you look at our other pets up for adoption, and also our past adoptions, you'll see that ALL our prices are low. We do this because it generates a lot of interest, and gets the pets adopted quickly. The more that get adopted, the more we can rescue. We only deal with pets in danger of being euthanized. The whole point is to save as many lives as possible! We are all about the animals here. And if you want to add a donation to the adoption price to show appreciation for all the hard work we do, then please indicate that in your application! Q: I don't see a phone #. Will someone please call me? A: Everything needed is online. I have found that online is the most efficient way to get all the work done. In the past, when I posted my #, my phone rang off the hook all day. So I spent the whole day on the phone, with not much work to show for it at the end of the day. Again, everything needed is online. Q: How do I adopt this pet? A: Your first step is to fill out an application. http://www.adoptapet.com/Safe-Haven/adoption-application/ Q: Can I adopt if I live out of state? A: Yes, Out of state adoptions are welcome. You have the choice of coming to Litchfield park AZ to meet and adopt, or having the pet transported to you. This also applies if you live farther than an hour away. An additional fee applies if you would like us to transport the pet to you. Fees are $195 for transport + the adoption fee. Fees might be slightly higher for medium and large dogs, depending on the cost of the crate. Fees are not due until transport has been confirmed. All transported pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on their vaccinations. They come with with a collar with ID attached, harness and leash, health certificate if required, bowls and food if it is more than a day trip, a voucher for a Free office visit to Vet, 50% off any Optimum Wellness Plan, 30 days of free Pet Insurance, Other coupons from Partners, and all available paperwork: Spay/Neuter records, Vaccination records, Vet records, Micro records, Recommendation list, etc... Q: Where is this pet? A: This pet is being fostered in a private home. Q: I like what you are doing & would like to help. Would you be open to a partnership? A: Absolutely! I am open to anything that helps care for the animals &/or saves more lives! Please e-mail me at Safe_Haven_Animal_Rescue@live.com and give me details about what you have in mind.
