My story

Queso is currently in Ottawa, Ontario Originally from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Pronunciation: ‘Kay-so’ Age: 7 years old Concerns: Arthritis Can’t see at night Weak hind legs – possible hip dysplasia occurring Has trouble going down and up stairs – increased in the morning Monitor scratching of his ears Medications: Dasuquin Soft Chews – 2 chewie’s in the morning with breakfast until January 15th; will go down to 1 chewy with breakfast on January 16th Food: Authority Chicken and Pea – Adult 1-7 No known allergies Description: Queso is a wonderful dog overall. He is very friendly and gentle in nature. He always looks very happy due to the constant smile on his furry face. He is an old soul; however, he most certainly has a puppy personality when it comes to playing with toys and going on walks. Queso prefers teddy’s as toys due to his teeth being worn down; he also enjoys balls and Kong toys that you can fill with peanut butter! He loves to play fetch and is learning how to gives the objects back without coaxing. Queso gets along well with other dogs, and does not seem to have a high prey drive – although squirrels definitely interest him! He seems like he would get along with cats as he shows curiosity about them and not aggression. Queso is crate trained and does fairly well inside of the crate – however, he knows when it’s bed time and refuses to go in the crate without some coaxing and a gentle push. Queso sometimes barks when he is left alone, but it only lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute (lately he’s been doing very well with not barking at all!). Queso knows his name very well; but sometimes he chooses not to respond as he is still being trained. Queso is doing very well with leash training. He will pull but if you use a ‘pshht’ sound and pull upwards on the leash he responds quite well and remains by the walker’s side. Queso knows the commands sit and come. He is currently working on stay and give paw. Queso sometimes will jump on people very lightly or paw at them – we ignore these behaviours and reward him when he stops; he’s slowly getting better. Queso also responds well to clicking sounds with the tongue. He most definitely responds better at this time to sounds versus English commands (perhaps because he’s used to Spanish). Queso appears to be afraid of basements, buses, and sewers (manhole covers). Overall, Queso loves to cuddle, play and eat! He is very trainable and will just need some well-deserved TLC (time, love, and care). Queso will eventually require dental work as some of his teeth are ground down from eating rocks. Current Schedule: Wake Up 6:30am or 7:30am Walk – 15 to 20 minutes Immediately after wake-up Breakfast 1 ½ cups Immediately after walk Treat – Homemade 7:15am or 8:15am Dentastix 12:30pm Walk 4:30pm or 5:30pm Dinner Immediately after walk Treat – Kong with peanut butter 7:30pm Bed Time Between 9:30pm and 10pm His Arthritis/Dysplasia makes him unsuitable as a therapy dog although he has the perfect temperament!

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Queso, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
