WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THIS PET. Rusty – UMDR ID# 021-1003 Fostered by Samantha and Drew Rusty came to us from a private home when his owner was no longer able to care for him due to health reasons. He is your typical Yorkshire Terrier, very bright, full of spunk and thinks he is the boss. “Yorkies are long-lived and hypoallergenic (the coat is more like human hair than animal fur), and they make fine little watchdogs. This is a true ‘personality breed,’ providing years of laughs, love, and close companionship.” Rusty weighs 6lbs and is 9 years old. Here is what Rusty’s foster family had to say about him: Rusty is a character extraordinaire. He is full of energy and cuddles, looking for his one and only forever home. He is in great health. Full of energy morning till night. Grateful he is little so, I can somewhat keep up. For a small dog he is high energy. He is not really a napper, he can be entertained with toys and will sit with you and cuddle. He is a great little walker. He managed a five kilometer hike today but he would be happy with a walk around the block. For nine he is very sprite, runs rings around our two and four year old dogs. He enjoys being brushed daily and that stops the knotting of his coat. It is easily maintained. We have not had him around children but I would definitely say older children if they are willing to be respectful of pups space. He can be nippy but kinda of playing and yippy at letting you know where he is. He has spent nine years with just he and his Momma, I think that is his preference where he is the center of attention. He is okay with other dogs but he does try to dominate. He stares down our Chakhil, a 50 lb Lab, to the point Chakil shirks away. He and Bear our Schnauzer mix, have not hit it off at all, two dominant personalities. He is cute as a button but can be quite a little bully at times. He has been non reactive toward other dogs when we have been walking. He was fine with cats but again, I think he wants all the attention for himself. He as been crated when alone and at night time for sleeping. He will bark for a few minutes then settles well. His favourite things – Be with you; Cuddle for days; Explore anywhere and everywhere he is eternally curious. He loves toys and will quite happily entertain himself. He is generally quiet in the home however he needs to be setup for independence. Being tiny he expects to be lifted every where. We set him up with step stools so, he can get up on to the sofa, bed etc. otherwise he will yip until you help. He is also capable of going up and down stairs but will again try and get you to carry him. However he also barks when he needs to pee so be aware of those cues. I would say he would do best with an active possibly older adult who is looking for a great companion. Possibly with no other pups or one that does not mind being bossed around. LOL, he will steal food. To say he counter surfs sounds funny but watch your coffee table, he finds them a very handy height. He doesn’t chew anything he shouldn’t. He knows basic commands and he will do them all when it is expected of him. Yet if you let him off he can be quite lazy. He is well settled just make sure to listen to those barks, give regular pee breaks and make sure he gets enough time to go. 20 mins or so as he will pee two or three times he will poop a couple a times a day. If you encourage him to pee he seems to stay focused other wise he is curious and off checking everything out. He is crate trained and likes it. He will take snacks, treats and toys in there, we have a really large one that he likes. He will go in at bedtime and when we are out maybe an hour or two here and there. He makes noise initially but we just say good night and he settles. He did bark consistently in the night once, but we found out it was because he needed to pee. He is fantastic on a leash and a lovely little walker. Rusty has never tried to bolt out the door and his recall is very good – he comes straight away. He loves the car. We set up a pillow between the front seats and he loves it. Rusty has personality for days. Those pictures say it all. Do not let his size fool you he is big hearted and a huge character. He could do well in an apartment. He certainly does not need a garden, just lots of opportunity to pee. He can do stairs but will try to get you to carry him. We live in a four story home and he has navigated it well.
