My story

We are just beginning to see Martha’s cute little personality! Martha is a is a 3-year-old Lhasa Apso who was released from a puppy mill. She will run around outside with me nearby. I keep joking that I’ve taught her to heel because she follows me so closely. But if we go inside she runs right into her kennel. Until a couple days ago I had to take her out of the kennel and take her outside. Now I can go nearby and say, “Wanna go outside? Come on.” and start toward the door and she’ll follow me outside. If she encounters anyone else, she might run back to the kennel or she might just run faster to get outside. She will come over to me to be petted but won’t do that with anyone else in the family. Just in the last couple days she will follow (with some distance) behind my husband as he walks around the yard but doesn’t want to get too close to him. Another first today was her putting her paws up on me and letting me pick her up and put her on the outdoor sofa. She hasn’t peed or pooped in her kennel or in the house. She is finally comfortable going outside and seems to know that’s a place to go but it’s not like she’s house trained because she won’t even walk around in the house. The first few days she peed twice a day and didn’t seem at all comfortable doing it anywhere but now she seems to understand that when she’s outside she can pee and will go multiple times a day. Yesterday was the first day she started showing what she wants with a little whimper. One was to get out of bed in the morning and another to get me to go in the yard so she could go, too. We were both on the deck but she was a little afraid to go out into the actual yard. She’s only been around the immediate family and the first couple days she wouldn’t do anything if any one of us tried to take her out of the kennel but yesterday and the day before she growled at my husband and son when they tried but not if my daughter or I did it. A couple times she’s run around the yard a bit with our dog but nothing I would call playing yet. That’s the update as of today! She just got spayed and a dental and we are accepting applications for her! She is up to date on shots, micro-chipped, and heart-worm and fecal tested negative.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Martha, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
