My story

Meet Leo — Compact, Cautious, and Cute! 2-Year-Old Shiba Inu/Basenji Mix | 24 lbs | MaleLeo is a little dog with a big voice and an even bigger personality. Originally adopted from PAC as a puppy, he’s had a few detours along the way and is now back with us, hoping his forever person is finally ready to find him. Warning: Leo is a barker. He may be 24 pounds of adorable, but he’s not the silent type. If barking isn`t your vibe, Leo might not be the guy for you — but if you appreciate a good watchdog and don’t mind a little noise, keep reading! What You Need to Know: Breed Traits Matter: As a Shiba/Basenji mix, Leo is intelligent, energetic, and independent. He’s also naturally cautious and will approach new people and situations at his own pace. But with patience and respect for his space, Leo warms up quickly — often within 15 minutes. Adults-Only, Please: Leo isn’t suited for homes with children. Their unpredictability might overwhelm him, and we want to set him up for success. Respectful Handling Only: Leo needs slow, positive introductions to things like vet visits or grooming. Fear Free professionals (vets, trainers, groomers) are highly recommended. Think training with patience, not force. Cat Curious: Leo showed gentle interest in cats and respected their boundaries. With dog-savvy cats, he could be a great match. Other Dogs: Leo hasn’t been dog-tested yet due to size mismatches, so a meet-and-greet is required. He may prefer calmer or similar-sized companions.Training Required: Leo is eager to bond and responsive to positive reinforcement. Continued training will help build his confidence and trust. Mental + Physical Outlet Needed: Leo is agile, alert, and full of energy. He’ll thrive in a home that gives him both brain games and physical activity. In the Shelter:Leo has passed his sociability and handling tests with flying colors. While he wasn’t interested in toys, he preferred focusing on his handler (aww!). He’s a quick learner, food-motivated, and showed no resource guarding.---Leo’s looking for someone who sees past the bark and into the heart of a dog who wants to trust again. If you understand his breeds, respect his pace, and are ready for a vocal sidekick with a quirky, lovable personality — Leo might just be your perfect match. Apply to meet Leo today and earn the trust of a lifetime.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt LEO, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
