Meet Pearla. This beautiful gal is no stranger to shelter life sadly and has been in and out of our care since May of 2023. When Pearla arrived at ACCT in May she was brought in by the police after her owner had given her to the officers. We are unsure of what she endured in her past, as she was emaciated and had abscessed bite wounds on her neck that were likely left untreated for a period of time. Despite this, she was the sweetest girl to both our vets, volunteers, and staff in the shelter. Pearla was friendly in our care and had great dog meets, but eventually was timestamped in July due to her length of stay and lack of space. Pearla was adopted, but then returned a day later due to being too strong for the adopter. After being returned Pearla went into long term foster care! Pearla did amazing in foster care and her foster parents said she was lovely and very dog friendly while with them. Pearla was in foster care until 9/30. Pearla was very stressed to be back at the shelter and while friendly outside of her kennel she was becoming reactive and stressed in her kennel. Pearla then went into a new foster home, but sadly returned to us again on 10/8 after the foster home not being the best fit for her. Pearla is once again very stressed and is lunging the kennel bars, hard barking and baring teeth. Each time Paerla has come back to the shelter her stress levels and creativity has increased. Due to this Pearla needs a dedicated adopter or foster who can give her long term placement and work with her. 10/9 per staff: Pearla is very stressed being back in shelter again. Sadly, everytime she is returned her reactivity has gotten worse. She is lunging the kennel bars hard barking, baring teeth, and is having a hard time self soothing. 10/9 per foster: When she first came home with me Pearla did not respond to any name. By the end of the week, I got her to successfully accept commands using Pearl Girl as her name! Pearl Girl is house and crate trained, never having an accident in either locations, even while crated during the work day. She does really well on car rides, short and long. She easily gets in and out of an SUV independently and excitedly. Pearl Girl was a great addition to a home with other dogs. While in the home environment, Pearl Girl picks up routine very quickly. Pearl also picks up easily on other dogs cues. When met with an old English Mastiff, Pearl quickly understood not to bother or bump the old lady! When met with equally as active neighbor dogs she kept up, ran around, played nicely and came when called. Pearl also did well with a deaf pup that did not acknowledge Pearl's cues, Pearl was always easily separated from play as necessary. Pearl does tend to hump submissive male dogs and needs redirection to stop. Pearl responds well to the negative noise "ehhhh when getting too rough in play or chasing an indoor cat. Pearl Girl walks well on leash, she does pull at times but is easily redirected. Pearl Girl does tends to pull excessively when small game or outside cats are in sight. When given the opportunity to run free, Pearl loves to get her zoomies out and runs fast! She runs and chases balls and other items but does not usually fetch them. She does always return to her human! She enjoys a peanut butter filled kong and was beginning to understand chewing on some Nyla bones. She would pair well with an active single or family that will provide her some free run opportunities or even a (shorter distance) running partner. When meeting new people or really excited to see her human, Pearl can jump up but again is easily redirected and does not continue such behavior when firmly corrected. Overall, Pearl Girl, is the most amazing sweetheart. Gives lots of kisses, leans on you, will cuddle right up if invited, adores all the pets and butt pats. She is constantly checking in with her human to insure safety and that she is being good. With proper introductions, she would fit amazingly in a home with other dogs. A house without cats and small game would be the best fit for Pearl Girl! 10/8 per foster: I'll need to bring Pearla back to shelter today or sometime this week. Living in the country has been great for her energy outlet and socially, running and playing with other pups and people. She does hump male dogs and has difficulty being redirected. Although great for that, the surrounding area is filled with small game and outside cats, causing a big issue. No matter the treat or commands used, she pulls uncontrollably. 10/2 per staff: Pearla remains very stressed in kennel, she is hard barking at the front, jumping on the bars, pacing, and will begin to bare teeth if you move closer. She will calm down for treats and still does great outside of kennel, but is definitely getting stressed. 9/25 per foster: Pearla (aka Stu) is the sweetest cuddlebug who loves her humans. We absolutely fell in love with her expressive eyes, cute snores, enthusiasm for treats, and love of a good sniff during a walk. She loves nothing more than exploring the neighborhood, meeting other dogs, and following her humans everywhere/cuddling them. She is house broken, crate trained, well behaved in cars, dog and people friendly, not scared of thunder/fireworks (!), and easy to train because she loves treats. She knows sit, crate, center, paw, down, and has recently been working on drop it, off, and stay. Her ideal home would have a yard to run around in and potentially other dog buddies, but she is flexible 9/2 per staff: Pearla was easy to leash and remove from kennel. In the eval room when I called to her she approached me with soft eyes and a neutral body. She sat between my legs and briefly allowed handling. We played tag for a bit and she is a very polite player! No jumping or mouthing. Was briefly interested in toys. Is still the sweet girl I remember but definitely a little stressed being back. 7/22 per foster: Pearla (also know as Stew) attending a Farmers Market event and did wonderful! She kept herself occupied by rolling in the grass, greeting every dog and person that passed by, and cuddling with her foster dad. She LOVED meeting dogs and would get very excited and try to mount them, but was wiggly and loose with them. She allowed petting from kids of all ages and was very sweet and gentle! 7/8 per staff: Owner is returning perla a day after adopting her because she is too strong for her. the owner didn't have anything negative to say about her. she is a big sweet marshmallow! she is patient and very well mannered and an absolute lovebug! she will wait for you when you tell her she understands sit and stay. she loves to cuddle and sleep at your feet. she has a great appetite. the only negative thing she said is she seems to be reverse potty trained 7/4 per staff: Pearla is a precious gem in the shelter and is as rare and captivating as a shimmering pearl. Her shelter story began on May 31st after she was forcibly given to the police after her owner's were having issues with their landlord. We are unsure of what she endured in her past, as she was emaciated and had abscessed bite wounds on her neck that were likely left untreated for a period of time. Despite this, she has been the sweetest girl to both our vets, volunteers, and staff in the shelter. Pearla's personality is as unique as a one-of-a-kind pearl necklace. She's a pro at melting hearts with her tender and gentle nature, and her ability to bring a sense of peace to any environment is simply unmatched. With her super mellow, chill, and calm demeanor, Pearla is a true master of tranquility. Her soothing presence will make your worries disappear, just like a gentle wave caressing a pearl on the shore. She is the definition of gentle and will greet you at the front of her kennel with the softest eyes. 7/4 per staff: Pearla was sitting calmly in her kennel when approached. She patiently sat while being leashed and walked very nicely out of kennel. She walks in pace with her handler and barely (if at all) pulls. Once outside, she sniffed around and was very excited to see another dog (loose body, wagging tail). She had a great face to face meet. She had multiple meets with the other dog and she wanted to play with her very badly, but the other dog was very nervous and did not engage in play. Afterwards she went into a yard with her handler and immediately started soliciting attention. She allowed all over petting, sat very nicely for treats, and even allowed her handler to cup her face into their hands to be pet. She is very calm and handler oriented. She returned to kennel with no issues. 7/1 per staff: Pearla was social in kennel when approached with a loose body. She was easy to leash and remove from kennel. She walked nicely on leash through the kennels and outside. Once in the yard, she walked around with her ears back and tail tucked at first, but after a few minutes opened up a bit and her body became looser. She preferred to stay close to her handler. She did allow all over handling from other handlers in the yard, but preferred a slower approach. She seems to enjoy being walked instead of being loose in a yard. She was easy to return to kennel. 6/1 per staff: When we got to the play yard, I dropped leash and let Pearla explore. She immediately did her business and seems very housebroken. She solicited attention with soft eyes and a loose body, but did have a tucked tail that untucked over time. She allowed all over handling, and loves face pets particularly, she'll burrow her head in you for more. She is a sweet girl but is clearly not feeling her best right now. She began crying after a little bit as she was struggling to go the bathroom and wiping her butt. She loves treats but can take them a bit intensely.
