Geeter ACCT-A-160866 is a 4-year-old male who came in as an owner surrender with three other indoor-outdoor cats (since adopted). They'd lived with their owner their whole lives. Geeter came to the shelter with several cautionary notes about his behavior, which appeared to his owner to be increasingly fractious and stress-based (hiding and hissing). They also reported that he'd previously attempted to bite. In his time in-shelter, however, though he initially exhibited regularly heightened levels of fear, anxiety, and stress, Geeter has grown more acclimated to his surroundings and tolerant of human company (if not touch). This is thanks in large part to regular efforts from staff and volunteers to engage with him, as well as a prescription of gabapentin for stress. Behavioral notes: Per staff on 5/7, "Geeter is sloooooowly opening up to me!! Past few times, including today I interacted with him he has not hissed at me. He sniffs my fingers more now, but I still have not pet him. Any time I reach my hand above his head he gets saucer eyes and I retreat. He accepts treats from me, and doesnt back away like he used to. I love this boy. He would do so good in a single person household or maybe an older couple who will give him a very slow start. He seems like he wants to be sweet, this environment just doesnt allow it for him." Per volunteer on 5/5, "Geeter did great with the staff member giving him Churu and sniffed her hand." Per staff on 5/4, "Didn't hiss at the staff member who's been working with him for a solid five minutes! Accepted tuna-flavored churu for the first time (off of his foot) and sniffed her finger for a moment! He also didn't try to run as much. Huge progress, very proud." Per staff on 4/22, "Still stressed, but didn't hiss as much. Before I attempted anything I sat in front of his kennel so I was below his eye level and gave a lot of slow blinks/avoided eye contact. Was able to slip things through the side of his kennel door without making him run/hiss, but he didn't engage with any treats. I opened the kennel a bit to try and reach in with some lickable treats further and Geeter finally had enough and went to his bedroom side. He did hiss when an adopter came in and I got up to talk to her." Per staff on 4/4, "Was laying half in, half our of the litterbox when I approached. Clear tension and avoiding eye contact. Tensed and retreated fully into the litterbox when I threw treats in. No interested in the treats and ignored the toys. I didn't push him." Per staff on 3/31, "patient is fractious in hospital [area of shelter] and will climb walls, starting Gabapentin twice daily." Per Geeter's owner surrender notes, he was described as "scared but friendly" and "shy" -- one of four indoor/outdoor cats surrendered together. His owner also commented: "Geeter I think is sick, he's been hiding and hissing at everyone" and cautioned that "Geeter has attempted to bite". Medical notes: On 4/26, Geeter was diagnosed with a URI. During a sedated check-in exam on 3/31, staff found Geeter to be in good general health, but fractious.
