** $395 in pledges to any rescue that pulls ** ** New behavioral notes! (9/21) ** EXTENDED Onyx ACCT-A-171311 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Onyx must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND at 10AM. Should Onyx's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Onyx is a senior boy looking for a warm, loving home to spend his golden years. Though he may seem a bit cautious at first, Onyx warms up quickly when he sees a familiar face or when enticed with some tasty treats. With his adorable face and gentle demeanor, it's impossible not to fall in love with this sweet boy! Onyx knows his manners well, including sit and paw, and takes treats with such care. He enjoys playtime, especially when it involves squeaky toys, and he can often be found amusing himself with a toy in tow. If you don't have any children under 13 in the home and are looking for a loyal, loving friend to share life's simple pleasures with, Onyx is ready to join you for his golden years. Due to his length of stay at the shelter, he is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. BEHAVIOR: **NEW** per volunteer 9/21/24: Had no issues with onyx again today! He definitely recognized me and allowed leashing super easily, remaining nice and loose. Outside he walks like a dream on leash! No pulling. He's cold club but seems like he's feeling much better and more energetic today. He is such a playful boy- immediately grabbed a tire toy and brought it to me in my lap. He was loose and wagging so I could tell he wanted to play- allows me to grab the other end of any toy he has to play tug! Super sweet and allowed pets all over. He showed me paw so nicely today! He knows paw on both paws- very impressive boy. Loved hot dog treats and took them Gently. Hoping an adopter can come through Per Volunteer 9/15: His doggy cold is really affecting him. He had a huge snot bubble and was refusing to even get up at first, despite the fact that he knows and likes me. Eventually he did get up and came outside but had a very small bowel movement due to not eating anything all day (food bowl was completely full). I poured some wet food on top of his bowl and this was successful, he went to eat then. He was a bit dopey outside but did still do his sniffs and solicit pets. Per Volunteer 9/8/24: LOVE this playful boy!! When I first approached his kennel he had hard eyes and seemed stiff and gave a low growl. I dropped treats and he immediately loosened and had a wagging tail. I slowly opened the door and he remained loose. I tossed more treats in and he was eating out of my hand. I leashed with no issue! He walks really nicely with no pulling- there were a bunch of people in our way due to the event and he was calm and patient while passing everyone, including a small dog. Outside in the play yard he was SO playful. He found a purple ball that he fell in love with. He squeaked it and kept presenting it in my lap. I didn't take it the first few times as I wasn't sure if he would guard it. He kept putting it in my lap so I took the other end and we did tug. Super playful. he took pets all over (while still holding the purple ball lol) and lovedddd the booty scratches. He walked all the way back inside with the purple kong and took it into his kennel as his new bff. No issues going back inside- such a sweetie! I hope people can look past his initial kennel presence. Per staff on 9/8: Approached Onyx's kennel from the opposite side than usual (the side without his kennel card) to get some new photos and videos (See video: Sometimes Onyx barks at passersby...). After he got a few barks out, he brought his toy over, enjoyed a few treats, and retreated back to his kuranda bed with his toy when he was through. Didn't observe any reactivity beyond barks. Per staff on 9/5: Observed Onyx being highly reactive to a male adopter in the kennels- he was jumping up on the bars barking, growling, snapping, and baring teeth at him. Per staff on 9/2: Onyx is reactive in kennel, baring teeth, growling and occasionally lunging but is a sweet heart outside. When trying to leash him, he loves baby talk and meaty treats and will warm up with a wagging tail and loose body. 8/31 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: Owner surrender KENNEL PRESENTATION: Onyx was sitting on his bed with raised hackles, wide tense eyes, and was growling. He backed away from the handler and they tossed in some treats. he slowly came to the front and allowed the handler to slip the leash over his head. No issues returning LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally HANDLING: Onyx came into the eval room cautious but warmed up to the other handler that he recognized and began wagging his tail and taking treats. He knows sit and paw and will take treats very nicely from you but can also catch and be snatchy. He has the cutest face and loves to push his body against you. He allowed all handling and did not react while we touched him with treats or toys in his mouth. Onyx loves toys and will trade for treats and other toys. Although he was growly and standoffish at first, if he recognizes you or you warm him up with meaty treats, he's the sweetest, biggest baby ever. PLAY Loves to play with himself and a toy TOYS: Loves squeaky toys Summarized from Onyx's surrender notes on 8/30, his owners described him as: - Having been with them for 11 years; they got him from a breeder/pet store - Friendly, good with kids - Having lived with adults and a 5-year-old - Housetrained - Crate trained - Medium energy - "Very friendly, very protective. - In response to the question of whether Onyx had ever bitten another person or animal: "yes has bitten another animal; got into a fight with another dog, the other came to him and attacked him he didn't have other choice to defend himself, no has never bitten a person. - Medical concerns: "left ear got damaged from the fight - Knows "sit and "paw. - Pulls a little on leash - His favorite toys: tires - Reacts: not too happy toward strangers, very good toward children, no good toward cats, and good toward other dogs. MEDICAL: On 9/16, Onyx was pending a vet check as his URI did not resolve. On 9/2, Onyx was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and prescribed 2 weeks of doxycycline. Since his test results came back negative for all the types of URIs we test for, his treatment was shortened to 7 days. During his intake exam on 8/31, Onyx had a shiny and clean coat with no live fleas, a bit of wax in his ears, and his eyes and nose looked good. He was described as bright, alert, and responsive, friendly, and very hype. They also noted that he "has broken teeth and bad stains didn't really let me look in mouth but what did see his teeth he looks to be about 10-11 years old. Onyx's true joy shines when he's pushing his body against you for some affection, showing just how much he craves human connection. Will you be the special someone to give this beautiful senior boy the forever home he deserves?
