My story

Say hello to Nova who has now been at FFAA since September 2024. Due to unfortunate and unsafe family circumstances, we took Nova into our care. Having been with her family since she was only 7 weeks old, she had a difficult time adjusting to shelter life, a problem which would soon be compounded by some unexpected and complex medical issues. Nova has been deaf since birth. Due to not being able to hear herself, she can be more vocal than the average dog. However, she knows quite a few hand signals that we will show her future adopters, including one for "Quiet." Seemingly separate from her deafness, her ears are a little sensitive and infection prone which we keep at bay by making sure to clean out her ears a couple times a week! After her spay, we found out the hard way that Nova has a blood clotting disorder. Thanks to the quick actions of staff that day and our vet's ability to get her in for emergency surgery, her life was saved. However, her road to recovery has not been easy. As she was bleeding out, something happened in her body that caused her to lose the ability to move her back legs. She was able to drag her body around, but her feet kept knuckling over so severely that she soon scraped open her feet and then licked them into becoming wounds. Since then, we have been fighting a battle with her body. One leg regained full control fairly quickly whereas the other still consistently knuckles over most of the time. It has take months for her wounds to finally close. We have worked hard to keep her pain under control as well. Nova sees a sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist in early February for a complete exam and report and hopefully an plan to give her her mobility back.Until that time, she will be in her intake kennel, cut off from the world except for her few playgroup breaks in a day. That's why we'd love to find her either a medical/respite foster or a foster-to-adopt placement. If you'd like to know more, please email adopt.ffaa@gmail.com and we'd be glad to answer any and all of your questions. With regards to her personality, she is dog friendly (she really enjoys dogs licking her ears) and LOVES her tiny humans (she is great with kids and teens of all ages). She's a perfect family dog! She is described as being a friendly couch potato who is super affectionate. She is house trained. During the day, she spent her time indoors and free roaming, and she is accustomed to having the pick of her family member's beds to sleep in. Her passions include car rides and her blankies - she loves suckling on them. She's a huge fan of sunbathing, and she greatly enjoys trips to the creek. Due to her frustration and boredom, we have seen a higher energy Nova, who despite her funky leg and discomfort will still sit perched on top of couches, leap, run, zoom around, and overall have a great time during her exercise excursions. Once she's settled down into being someone's baby again, we expect her to return to her previous couch potato status. When we asked if there's anything that they would like Nova's future owner to know, we were told, "She is an amazing dog. She will greet you with a smile every time you walk in the dor. She loves her tiny humans; we are her emotional support people. She loves to be petted and blankets.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Nova, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
