Basha ACCT-A-172890 arrived at the shelter on 8/30 as an owner surrender. Over the six years she spent in their care, she had three litters of puppies (28 total), never spent time around people or dogs outside the household, and has recently developed treatable conditions (fleas, worms) that her owners stated they were no longer able to provide care for. During her time in the shelter, Basha has exhibited elevated levels of fear, anxiety, and stress which have slowly begun to taper off as she gets acclimated to new experiences, makes new friends, and learns to trust. Basha's in need of a new, steady companion to show her a whole new world! She was sleeping on her bed when I approached. I dropped some treats and she popped her head up but didn't stand up. She seemed loose so I started to put my leash in the kennel, but she got up and went to the complete other side of the kennel, shaking. I tossed more treats and closed the divider to make the area a bit smaller. Approached her with the leash and she remained loose but scared and allowed me to leash her. She hopped right of the kennel after that! Walks great on leash without any pulling. She was very low energy for me today. When we got to the play yard I sat on a bench and she sat right next to me. She hung out there and seemed loose but her tail remained tucked. I tossed a few treats and she always explored them but didn't eat them. She took treats super gently from my hand but then dropped them on the ground. She remained loose while we were out there so I gave her some pets and she leaned into me a bit. Not overly affectionate but definitely more comfortable than at first- she is such a scared girl in the kennels! After walking more I see that her tail is naturally a bit tucked. No issues going back into the kennel Per staff on 9/3: Basha got out for some one on one time today! In kennel she was curled up on her bed, and watched me with cautious eyes. I crouched down and showed her the leash, but she avoided eye contact and looked to the other side of kennel. She did not move so I lassoed her easily, and once secured she came out on her own. She walked nicely through the kennels, but did hesitate to walk through the eval room door. I coaxed her through with baby talk and cheese but she would not take the cheese from me. She froze int he center of the room, trembling for several minutes. I left some cheese near her, and after a few minutes she began licking at it, but did not pick it up. I offered her another piece and she took it from me incredibly gently, with just her baby front teeth, but dropped it in front of her. I gave her more space and time, and eventually she began to sniff around the room, and even wagged her tail here and there! I offered her different treats and she would take them all from me gently, but never actually ate any. She didn't show any interest in toys or play today either. She leaned into some neck scratches and kicked her leg at some booty scratches, but her fleas are really bad, and I'm sure she's soo itchy. She curled into my chest and allowed more handling than before, and she had stopped trembling at this point. With her so close I noticed how bad her fleas were, and I wanted to give her a bath to wash off some of the flea dirt and eggs. Basha got very nervous and started trembling again when I picked up the leash. She pulled back on the leash and refused to come forward, slightly panicking. I crouched down and coax her over to me, and she approached slowly. I was able to get her moving without much issue after this, and she walked with me very nicely to the laundry room to find towels. We went out tot he yard for a hose, since our grooming room is under construction. Unfortunately, I was called elsewhere right before I could give her a bath, but she walked with me very nicely and we happy to just tag along with me. She hesitated going back into kennel, but climbed in when I stepped in with her. Basha seems to be opening up slowly, but I think she would really feel better with a bath and a nail trim. Per staff on 9/1: Basha in kennel was trembling, laying down and needed to be lasso'd. Coming out of kennel, she thrashed around when she felt leash pressure, she needed a big tug but thrashed and bucked and ended up falling out of the kennel. She slowly got up and walked fully out. She allowed the handler to touch her all over without over-reacting with neutral eyes and the occasional lip licking-- she is a lot more tolerant now. She moved around the room instead of picking a spot and remaining still AND laid down, relaxing herself at the handlers feet. Per staff on 8/31: Unable to remove from kennel for exam. Scheduled for Trazodone BEHAVIOR EVALUATION (8/31) KNOWN HISTORY: Owner surrender KENNEL PRESENTATION: Basha was laying down on her bed and did not move when called. The handler lowered the divider and threw in the leash for her to sniff. She sniffed the leash, gave hard eye contact and whale eyes when the handler tried to leash her. Once secured she refused to come out but then ran out because she was scared of a loud noise LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally- freeze and fearful on leash (with any leash pressure she will thrashing and leash bites) HANDLING: Basha came into the eval room, went into the middle of the room and froze. She has not moved from that spot since, she was offered treats, she sniffed and looked away, if you try to pet her she gives hard eye contact and side eyes, she will tense up most of the time. She perked up at the sound of a squeaky toy, softer eyes but went right back to being stiff. She allowed the handler to touch her head but hard stared and her and pushed her butt towards the handler for butt scratches. She loves butt scratches and that's the only place she allows touch without concerns. PLAY Did not attempt TOYS: Perked up for the sound of a toy COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS: Blue - exp. Blues (growled at the handler while returning back to kennel) Per staff on 8/30: Went to go get a picture of Basha she was lying on her bed very relaxed, she seemed like she had no idea I was in front of her and had kind of a blank stare not sure if she has problems seeing or what but she didnt react to me at all Per her owners on 8/30, Basha was described as follows: - Mostly housetrained - Partially crate trained - Low-energy - Slow-moving, laid-back, feisty at times - Knows "sit, "no, "stop - Reacts "aggressive toward strangers, barking at them Medical notes: During an intake exam on 9/1, staff noted: - severe dental calculus, gingivitis, possible dental disease, severe staining, worn teeth - Live fleas, flea dirt, alopecia possibly associated with flea allergy ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
