My story

Meet Walter (formerly Sugar Baby) Walter came to us with the name Sugar Baby, but we quickly realized that Walter suits him much better — a little spunky, a little dorky, and a whole lot of sweet old-man charm. He lost his owner due to old age, and while reviewing his vet records, we were heartbroken to learn they wanted him debarked for excessive barking. We’re so grateful he made it to our rescue, where we can now find him the safe, loving home he truly deserves. While his past family was concerned about barking, we’ve found that Walter mostly barks when he’s excited and playing with his toys. It’s his way of having fun and expressing joy — not a behavior problem, just part of his quirky charm. Walter is working on building confidence when meeting new people. Because of this, he’ll need an experienced adopter who can go slow with introductions and give him the time and patience he needs to feel secure. But once you’ve earned his trust, Walter will be your loyal companion for life. Walter would thrive in a home with another friendly dog. He absolutely loves playing with a canine buddy — having a friend helps him feel more confident and brings out his playful side. That said, he’s also content to relax in his own cozy space when he needs a break. He’s can be a bit hard of hearing but we dont believe he is deaf. He is also needs a family committed to helping him lose weight for his long-term health. As he gains more confidence he is needing his muzzel less and less for vet and grooming visits, but he still needs support as unfamiliar situations and people can make him nervous, and he may nip out of fear. The good news is, Walter is great at reading signals and responds well when respected and supported. Despite his quirks, Walter is full of love and personality. He enjoys chasing his bone when tossed, playing tug with a rope, and curling up on his favorite pillow near his person. He’s also an excellent travel buddy — he snoozes peacefully during car rides and enjoys the journey. If you're ready to open your heart to a dog who just needs a little extra understanding — and a four-legged friend — Walter is ready to give you his. Please consider welcoming this sweet soul into your home and showing him the love he’s been waiting for.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Sir Walter Sugar Baby, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
