My story

AZARI is a young senior hippo (est 10 years) who was left at the NYC shelter in Nov. 2022, tied him to the fence. He was placed on his former guardian's jacket, and left in a manner that tells us he was loved, but his human felt there was no other option. We rescued this 65-70 lbs. low rider (Bully/Bulldog/pit mix)in Feb 2022. We have spared no expense in meeting his veterinary needs, from neutering and vaccines to neurological issues being ruled out with an MRI and advance diagnostics, as well as a dental surgery to correct severe dental disease and remove rotting teeth. He most recently had a CT scan done on his ears to understand and help us eradicate his ear infections, which gave us an all clear on the need for further intervention! AZARI is a quiet mix of SLEEP, EAT, CUDDLE, REPEAT! He is the gentle force in our #OneLuckyPup program, the dog we worry most about. He’s a big boy entering his senior years - dogs are an unknown as he’s had varying reactions and we believe he’d simply like to enjoy the rest of his life with humans who are looking for a lower energy dog who likes to sleep 23 hours out of the day and eat and cuddle the remaining hour. He has been fostered with Pancake the cat for the past 14 months and after an intro period, they coexist beautifully! AZARI is medically stable on a prescription diet. While he is missing most of his teeth, he eats his kibble and wet food just fine. He is crate trained but doesn’t require it. He loves the car, long meandering walks and wet kisses. He would like a small world in a home with lower traffic. He bones quickly with his human and would do just fine living on his own with a solo human. Due to a chronic shoulder injury after being improperly restrained during his dental surgery, AZARTI is on pregabalin (Lyrica) and carprofen (anti inflammatory) daily. He can be reactive to unknown people in the home and at the vets these days, so a home without children is required. AZARI's adoption includes a three month adjustment period that includes support from our org as well as follow up care virtual visit with our Veterinary Behaviorist and complimentary virtual training sessions from our certified positive reinforcement CDBC trainer. To apply to adopt (out of state okay, he does great in the car!) head to mrbonesandco.org/adopt or email elli@mrbonesandco.org with questions.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Azari, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
