My story

Meet Zena ACCT-A-209497! Zena is a 4-year-old female who came in as a stray on 7/30 after being abandoned. Zena is unfortunately no stranger to the shelter as she was here back in December of 2024 and was adopted shortly after arriving. Videos: Goldie and Zena Meet! https://youtube.com/shorts/zCSVgFsen0k Behavior Notes: The owner came in to surrender Zena and did fill out some of the owner surrender form before leaving Zena. The owner noted, “Zena lived with children and is medium energy.” Per a day trip on 12/22/24: “She was sooo sweet we love her! We took her to wissahickon and she did really well. She seemed interested in the other dogs we saw from a distance, but we never got close enough to gauge her reactivity. But we would be surprised if she had aggression as she was wagging her tail a lot. She loved the chicken nuggets we got for her and was very trusting and sweet. Xena let us lift her into our car with no hesitation and gave face kisses. She would be such a sweet cuddler and we hope she finds a home soon!” Per volunteer 12/22/24: “She was in a standalone crate in the back but was easy to leash and super easy walking! She’s a little chunky potato and super sweet!! On leash just some minimal pulling, she’s very wiggly and has loose body language. She knows sit and takes treats very nicely. Super affectionate- loves leaning into you and taking pets all over. Hard barked at another dog that walked by that was snarling at her. Had a bloody stool but otherwise seemed healthy and energetic . No issues returning to kennel!” Per staff 12/21/24: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Zena KNOWN HISTORY: Stray KENNEL PRESENTATION: Zena was in a crate and was alert barking but topped when she saw the handler and looked up with neutral eyes. She was patient with the leash and came out perfectly. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally HANDLING: In the room, Zena was super social and ran around going back and forth between sitting down relaxing, running around and laying next to the handlers. She was pretty uninterested in us but allowed all approaches and all handling. She was very tolerant and was loose and wiggly. She showed no interest in chasing us or running around unless it was on her terms and is super laid back and reserved. PLAY: Engaged in play – lost interest quickly TOYS: Ran after a ball for a couple seconds before walking away and sitting back down” Per finder 12/20/24: “Friendly” Medical Notes: Per an exam on 7/29: “Dog developed heat stroke at ACCT while waiting to be surrendered. Objective: -Sternally recumbent and panting heavily w/ obvious stertor -T=106.5 Assessment: -Heat stroke -Upper airway obstruction secondary to above and brachycephalic syndrome. Per an exam on 7/29: “Patient was brought in as a possible owner surrender but then the person left, patient is now considered a stray. Patient was excessively panting and hypersalivating up in lobby, temp 106.5. Regurgitated twice. Assessment: -Temp: 106.5 F @ 10:15 am -Excessive panting -CRT Injected, dry -Hypersalivating, regurgitating clear bile.” Per an exam on 12/24/24: “No hair loss noted small healing wound on left stifle. Per an exam on 12/20/24: -Body condition score of 7 -Eyes have some discharge -Ears are dirty -Teeth have yellow staining -Some hairloss on back. If you are a rescue interested in pulling this animal, please email our lifesaving team, or visit here if you are not currently a rescue partner: https://acctphilly.org/acct-philly-love-local-partnership-program/ Confirmed placement is considered a confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent. All animals at ACCT Philly are from Philadelphia, as the only open-intake animal shelter in Philadelphia, we are not able to accept animals from outside of Philadelphia. ACCT Philly's Pennsylvania kennel license number is 08313.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Zena, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
