Buddyboy is a sweet but nervous black mixed-breed dog looking for a patient and understanding adopter to help him thrive. Found as a stray in a park, a kind family took him in and cared for him for two months before bringing him to the shelter, realizing they didn’t have the time to give him the attention he needed. Despite his nervous nature, Buddyboy has shown a deep affection for people, often hopping into laps for snuggles and leaning in for pets. He takes treats gently and knows how to sit, making him a smart and eager companion for the right home. Buddyboy had a successful dog meet at the shelter, immediately wanting to play. While he could be a bit overwhelming at times, he read the other dog’s cues well and took breaks when needed. Unfortunately, shelter life has been very stressful for him. He struggles in his kennel, sometimes smearing feces, and has shown increased anxiety when confined. However, outside of his kennel, he is a completely different dog—affectionate, wiggly, and full of energy. He enjoys attention and is very tolerant of handling, even when feeling overwhelmed. Buddyboy does need slow introductions to men, as he has displayed some nervousness, particularly around unfamiliar males. While he previously lived in a home with children, his growing anxiety means he would do best in an adult-only home or a home with kids 15+ where he can feel safe and secure. He is housebroken, very friendly with other dogs, and has a playful, energetic nature that would benefit from regular exercise and enrichment. This sensitive boy is struggling in the shelter environment and would truly benefit from an adopter who can provide him with stability, patience, and love. Could you be the one to give Buddyboy the second chance he deserves? He did very well for his dog meet, but was a little overwhelming at times. He immediately wanted to play and jumped at the other dog, but Midnight was playful and played back a bit. He got overwhelmed and pressed into his handler, and Buddy Boy was good about reading his cues and taking breaks. Buddy Boy was so sad going back inside, and just wanted to stay out and play with his new friend! He pancaked, but would army crawl towards me for comfort and love. He allowed me to hug him and pet him all over while stressed without any issue. He wouldn't walk, so I had to ask for help carrying him back to kennel. When back in kennel he just looked back at me with the saddest eyes. Poor Buddy Boy is not doing well in his kennel, and would really benefit from a quick exit with an adopter who can give him the time, attention, and exercise he needs! Per staff 1/28/25: Smearing feces in his kennel- FAS is increasing Per staff 1/27/25: BuddyBoy came out for activity time 1/26. BuddyBoy was in the middle of his kennel and was play bowing, backing up, baring teeth, and snapping at the leash playfully when I reached in. It took me some time to leash him but I threw a couple lasso's before he was finally secured. In the room, I let him run around the room due to his amount of energy in kennel and out. He was alot of fun and did jump on me alot but does calm down with treats. Per staff 1/22/25: Helped surgery remove Buddyboy from kennel for surgery. He was wiggly at the front and bouncing on the door but once opening to leash him he got tense and retreated away growling. Lowered the divider and he placed himself in the corner tense, growling, whale eye, paw lifting and would thrash and snap at the leash. After a few lasso attempts I was able to get him leashed and he then exited without issue, fine once out of kennel. Per volunteer 1/21/25: Meet Buddyboy, a loving boy who’s ready for a fresh start. Found in a park and cherished by his finder for a few months, Buddy is now in our care when they realized they couldn’t dedicate the time to him he desired. Buddy loves people —hopping onto laps for snuggles and leaning in for pets, showing his sweet and trusting side. Buddy takes treats gently and likes to show off his ‘sit’ skills. He’s looking for an adopter who can offer the understanding and stability he needs to thrive. Are you the one to give Buddy the love and care he’s been waiting for? Per staff 1/21/25: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Buddy was laying by the door of his kennel when approaching. When the handler called to him he began to whine, paw, and leap at the door. He was spinning in circles and continuously jumping on the door and trying to push out for leashing. The handler used a very high and wide loop to get the leash over his head. Once secured came out of his kennel easily. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls very strongly HANDLING : In the room Buddy was aroused, but calmed down significantly compared to his kennel presence. He had wide buggy semi soft eyes in the room, was panting, drooling and appeared stressed to be here. He hopped up on my lap for pets when greeting me and was tolerant to all handling, leaning against me and continuing to pant. He let me pet his head, back, sides, and face without any issue and let us adjust his collar. He took treats very gently when offered and showed knowledge of sit. When a male staff member entered the office Buffy began to growl, alert bark, and pull towards him with tense body language. He calmed down after a few minutes of taking treats from him, but does need a slow intro to men!
