Meet Beef, a gentle giant with a heart of gold who’s looking for his forever home. Surrendered on January 24 along with his mom, Gracie, Beef’s previous owner faced a challenging situation—his mother-in-law was moving in and he simply couldn’t accommodate all four of his dogs. Despite his past home noting his joyful nature—crate-trained, loving toward big dogs, cats, and kids, and already knowing “sit” and “lay down”—life has been a bit of a roller coaster for this sweet boy. At the shelter, Beef’s personality shines through once he’s out of his kennel. Although he can be visibly anxious indoors—trembling, crouching, and even hesitating to return after outings—he quickly becomes affectionate and playful when out and about. Volunteers and staff alike have described him as a treat-motivated, easy-to-leash companion who loves cuddles and playtime. During various meet-and-greet sessions with other dogs, he’s shown a mix of behaviors: sometimes a bit intense or reactive when meeting certain dogs, yet also calm and sweet when given a chance to warm up, especially with his favorite handler by his side. He will need a dog meet with any potential canine-friends and seems to prefer female dogs. While Beef may get a little jumpy from excitement and can be cautious in unfamiliar settings, his willingness to learn and his gentle nature make him a great candidate for continued training and a loving adoptive home. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who just needs a bit of extra reassurance and patience, Beef is ready to show you all the love he has to give. Beef jumped right in and settled / laid down quickly. Walks great on leash / slow pace / casual walker. Curious but not aggressive! Didn’t bark at other dogs or people. Very friendly with strangers. Good adventure buddy with a very sweet temperament. 02/08/2025 Walksheet notes 2/4-2/6 2/4- You'll enjoy nice strolls when walking with this sweet boy! Beef went out with a staff member who described him as a friendly boy who is well-behaved on leash and doesn't pull. He had low energy levels and no issues were reported during their time together 2/5 & 2/6- Beef must have made a great first impression because he got to spend some time with the same volunteer two days in a row. They said they had no issues and low energy and noted he was in the doggy cold club. Per staff 2/4/25: Due to the other dog being reactive, got Beef out for another dog meet. We started with a fence meet and he was a bit intense. He was jumping up and putting his paws on Gris's face but then did a small snarl. On the walk-along he was pulling a lot more on leash than the previous meet and when Gris approached him, he growled. I brought him back to kennel and he put the brakes on again, not wanting to return. We decided to do a meet with a female dog, so I got him back out. This time he was fine with her, but she gave him a correction when he got in her face. He was a lot better on leash for this meet. Once again, he put the brakes on but these was before we even got into the building. Each time I took him out, he did not give any issues removing him from kennel and he would hop back in on his own once we made it to his kennel. I was able to pull the leash over his head each time. Per staff 2/4/25: Beef was so sad coming out of kennel, he was shaking and crouching as he walked. Once outside, he was fine. He immediately went to the bathroom, so may be housetrained. He was fine during a dog meet even though the other dog was being reactive towards him. On our way back, I jogged with him, but as soon as we got inside, he froze, crouching as he walked again. He is a sweet pup outside but is really scared inside the shelter. Walk sheet notes 1/25/25-2/1/25: 1/25- Beef was taken out by a volunteer who reported having no issues at all during their time together. Beef had medium energy levels this day and was described as being a sweet and easy boy. He was later taken out by a staff member who noted he had medium-to-high energy levels and was "dog selective/reactive!" 1/28- Beef went out with a volunteer who noted no issues except for some mild shyness. They described him as nervous but very sweet! 2/1- Beef went through some PCR testing before he was taken out again. Despite not getting out for a few days (per his worksheet) the volunteer said they had no issues at all and he had low energy levels. He was noted as being in the doggy cold club and was a "gentle boy" during their time together Per staff 1/28/25: Beef came out for activity time today. He came into the room with a tucked tail and trembling body. He jumped right into a handler lap for comfort and solicited affection from everyone. He allowed handling from everyone and gave everyone some sweet cuddle time. He jumped around the room for awhile with a wagging tail. The more he was around the room the more he warmed up with us. He started whining for our attention and pacing around when we didn't give it to him at all times. Per volunteer 1/25/25: Beef is a gentle giant who loves being close to his people. He’s easy to leash and walks well with staff and volunteers alike -even when passing by groups of people and other dogs. He enjoys pets and with a wagging tail will chase toys and play! Beef knows “sit,” takes treats gently, and is very treat-motivated, making him a great candidate for continued training. While he can get a little jumpy out of excitement, he remains gentle. Beef is looking for a loving home where he can feel secure and learn a few more tricks! Per volunteer 1/25/25: Beef was very easy for leashing! He walks well on leash with just minimal pulling. He’s a super loose boy and very affectionate- takes pets all over and easy for handling! He knows sit and take treats very gently. Seems very treat motivated! He’s a bit jumpy just out of excitement but was gentle with handling. Very sweet and tolerant boy, no issues returning to kennel even having to pass several people and dogs to get back Per staff 1/25/25: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Beef was up on the door alert barking when the handler approached. Eh got down and had soft eyes and tucked tail. He sniffed the leash curiously and allowed easy leashing. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally – fearful on leash – walked past children, large groups of people, and reactive dogs HANDLING : In the room, Beef stuck by the handler that took him out and was velcro’ed to her side. He allowed all handling from them and was focused on playing with her. He had a loose body and wagging tail. He would whine and cry whenever she left and came over to me with a tucked tail and tolerant pets but was this preferred person. Once his main handler came back into the room, he went running to her with a loose body and mid level wagging tail. He jumped all over, playing with her and accepting treats. He takes treats very gently and sits patiently for them. He is a very gentle giant and a sweet anxious boy overall. PLAY: Engages in play TOYS Likes toys Per owner 1/24: joyful, lived with big dogs, cats, and kids, crate-trained, concerns about issues with food guarding, knows sit and lay down, loves stuffed animals, barks at strangers, good with kids, cats, and familiar dogs. Medical Notes: 1/30/25: Negative for canine pneumovirus 1/29/25: This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They will need a veterinarian to examine them before they receive surgery, if they are not already altered. 1/24/25: Eyes -clear Ears - mild wax Nose - clear Mouth/Teeth/Gums - mild to no staining Coat & Skin - Red missing hair on left back leg, dry skin, no fleas Urogenital -male, intact Gait/Mobility - No lameness Attitude: BAR, very friendly, likes treats Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
