Hugo is a stunning Maine Coon mix with a striking presence and a gentle soul, though he’s still shy around people. Shelter volunteers have noticed that he’s curious and seems to want attention—he’s just unsure how to trust.Likely having had little human interaction, Hugo is considered semi-feral. He’s not aggressive, just frightened, and would do best with an experienced cat person or a patient foster who can help him feel safe.Semi-feral cats often find comfort in the company of other cats, and Hugo is no exception—he would thrive in a home with feline companions. With time, care, and understanding, Hugo has the potential to blossom into a truly loving companion. For any new pet, we recommend following the 7-3-3 Guideline to support a smooth transition. This thoughtful framework offers a realistic timeline and helpful tips for pets who may need extra time and patience to adjust. By providing structure and understanding, you’ll give your new companion the best chance to thrive—and become a beloved part of your family.7 Days to Decompress: When first brought home, your new cat will need a quiet space—like a small room—where he/she can feel safe and observe from a distance. Establish consistent routines, such as feeding, litter box use, and quiet interaction, to help him/her settle in.3 Weeks to Start Adjusting: Over the next few weeks, your cat will begin exploring more, recognizing your presence, and getting comfortable with the household’s rhythm. During this time, gentle interaction and positive reinforcement will help build trust.3 Months to Fully Acclimate: It can take up to three months for adopted pets to feel completely at home, confident, and bonded with their new family. By this time, their personality will shine through, and will likely be showing their affectionate and playful side regularly.
