My story

Dilemma - 2 years, 32lbs, Beagle, Neutered  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Our Foster Team Says: "Beagle fans: he's a true beagle! Would do best out of the city but also not scared of the city can just get a little overstimulated. Currently being fostered in Bk." Thier Foster Parent Says: "Dilemma (or Deeds for short, as we've been calling him) is the sweetest snuggler and friendliest boy. He always wants to be sitting on your lap or laying on your chest, and gives the best "hugs." It's clear he's never had any formal training but has already gotten the hang of "sit" within 2 days and seems very eager to learn. He is very treat motivated and also responds well to pets or rubs as positive reinforcement, which is a double whammy. That said, he is a very high-energy dog and needs a family that can provide lots of stimulation throughout the day to keep him occupied — he responds well to nose/mind games, play time, and long walks. Once he's tuckered out, he likes to rest in his crate and sleeps quietly through the night (a full 7 hours, to the minute!) but is a classic beagle and howls when he's ready to be let out. All in all, Deeds has so much love to give! He loves every single person he comes into contact with on walks and can never get enough snuggles." INTERMEDIATE: This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Energy LevelHigh -- Requires lots of activity like jogging, long walks, would thrive with agility training Cuddle Bug LevelHigh -- Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time Potty TrainedYes -- Few or no accidents Comfy with strangers?Yep -- Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello. Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)Yes for 12 and up -- may be a little energetic or a little skittish, best with older children that can be extra gentle or that are big enough not to get accidentally knocked down Social with Other Dogs?Mostly -- Generally good with other dogs but howls out of excitement when he sees a dog in the distance on walks may be picky (scared of big dogs or plays too rough for small dogs, for example)Respectful of Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.)NO CATS!!!!Nope -- Really likes to chase small animals, definitely not a good match for a home with cats, rodents, etc. Mouthy Behaviour Medium – Is respectful of hands, feet, etc. but occasionally gets a little mouthy when excited and chews on things it’s not supposed to like blankets, etc. Leash Manners?Learning Leash Skills – learning how to walk on a leash Okay in the city?Yes but a little over stimulated  -- he is not spooked by noises but is very excitable at people walking, dogs in distance, distractions. Has a very cute howl when sirens passJumping on People to Say Hi?High – Very excited to greet everyone and has no idea how to do so politely. Jumps up on most strangers or other dogs that go by. In puppy phase or wasn’t trained as a young adult. Separation Anxiety?(Please be sure to leave your foster dog home alone every single day for at least 20 minutes.) Medium – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone. Crate training?Yep/mostly – Seems comfortable in the crate, may whine a little at first but settles pretty quickly. We use the crate when we leave the pup alone and/or at night.  Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. If you have any questions or would like to adopt Dilemma, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
