Colter Brooks is a handsome, thoughtful little guy with a big personality and an even bigger heart—once he knows you’re safe to love. At just a year old, this standard Dachshund is learning the world doesn’t have to be scary and that good things happen when you have kind, patient people on your side. Colter is currently thriving in his foster home with clear structure and routine. He’s not kennel-trained, but he does well with a gated area—this helps him feel secure, especially around food and treats. He’s fully potty trained and spends his days either following his foster around or relaxing contentedly in his bed. 🐶 Personality & Preferences Affectionate on his terms – Once you’ve earned his trust, Colter enjoys gentle affection and will seek out closeness. Loyal and observant – He’ll watch the world go by from the door without barking, and he’s learning to navigate shared spaces calmly. Not a fan of blankets – Due to possessiveness, his bed area should stay blanket-free, and he should not be allowed on beds or furniture with blankets to avoid stress. Playful, smart, and responsive – He understands “no” and respects boundaries once he knows the rules. 🧠 Ongoing Training & Progress Colter is working through food guarding behaviors. His foster has made great progress by offering structured feeding routines and using calm body language to build trust. As long as food and treats are offered after his space is secured, he remains relaxed and non-reactive. He’s also learning how to share space and affection with other dogs under supervision. He should never be hand-fed through a gate or door, and food should always be placed down with the gate closed first. These steps help him feel safe and prevent resource-guarding reactions. 🐕🦺 Dog & Cat Friendly Colter gets along well with other dogs, even those who are picky about their friends—he respects their space and adjusts his behavior accordingly. He’s curious but polite with cats and has shown no signs of chasing or aggression. 👶 Children While he adores his foster’s teenage son, Colter is not suited for homes with young children, who may not understand his need for space, especially around food or bedding. 🏡 Ideal Home Colter Brooks would thrive in an adult-only home with a patient, dog-savvy adopter who understands the importance of structure, routine, and reading canine body language. He doesn’t need a high-energy lifestyle—just calm companionship, clear expectations, and someone who’ll give him the time and space to settle in and trust. Colter has come a long way, and with the right home, he’ll continue to blossom. If you believe in second chances, value quiet companionship, and enjoy watching a dog learn how to love again—Colter Brooks is waiting for you.
