My story

Have you ever seen a majestic, snow-white lion cub before? You know, the kind that looks like it belongs in a nature documentary narrated by David Attenborough? Well, brace yourself, because we’ve got one… sort of. Meet Dusty—our fluffy, slightly smudged, and absolutely adorable "white lion cub" (who may or may not just be a Great Pyrenees with artistic grey streaks). Don’t believe me? Scroll down and bask in his regal, an majesctic glory. 🦁✨ Okay, so the truth behind this glorious mane isn’t quite as legendary as you’d hope. Dusty didn’t spend his early days ruling the savanna or starring in a nature documentary—nope, he was stuck with humans who clearly didn’t deserve his fabulousness. Somehow, they overlooked the fact that they had a literal gem of a dog and let him end up in a shelter. And before you think, “Oh, maybe they just didn’t know better,” let me stop you right there. The neglect started way before that. Our poor little lion cub came in with some serious hair loss, probably thanks to flea bite dermatitis—which is just a fancy way of saying he was basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for fleas. Disgusting, right? He was itching so much he practically scratched and chewed himself bald. But don’t worry, this tale has a happy ending. Thanks to some amazing people who refused to let him waste away in doggie jail, Dusty was busted out and is now living his best life in our fluffy butt family. He’s about 3 months old, already a whopping 32 pounds, and fully embracing his role as the most majestic Great Pyrenees cub you’ll ever meet. When it comes to other dogs, Dusty is the life of the party, the social butterfly, the pup who walks into a room (or dog park) and immediately acts like he’s known everyone forever. He’s not just mingling; he’s hosting, hyping everyone up, and probably trying to start a conga line. Personal space? Never heard of it. If there’s a dog within a 10-mile radius, Dusty is convinced they’re his new best friend and absolutely must wrestle, zoom, or cuddle immediately. As far as cats go, oh Dusty has thoughts. Mostly along the lines of, “What are these tiny, fast-moving creatures, and why won’t they be my friends?!” He’s not looking to add them to his dinner menu—just his ever-growing list of playmates. If a cat or small critter stands its ground, Dusty will probably tilt his head, reconsider his life choices, and attempt some awkward sniff-based diplomacy. But if they run? Well, game on. He suddenly becomes an Olympic sprinter, fully convinced this is just an elaborate game of tag. So, while he’s not out for blood, he is out for fun—whether the cat agrees or not. When it comes to kids, the really tiny ones are still a bit of a mystery to him—he hasn’t been around those wobbly, snack-covered creatures just yet. But bigger kids? Oh, he’s all in. He’s the ultimate oversized little brother, ready for adventure, zoomies, and whatever fun they can cook up together. If you’ve got older kids who want a fluffy, four-legged sidekick that’s always down for a game, Dusty’s your guy. Just be warned—he fully expects to be included in everything. Movie nights? He’s on the couch. Backyard shenanigans? He’s leading the charge. Secret late-night snack raids? Yeah, he saw that, and he wants in. When it comes to meeting new people, lets just say that he’s not exactly the “OMG NEW BEST FRIEND” type, nor is he launching himself at strangers like an overenthusiastic Walmart greeter. Instead, he’s more of the “Hmm… you seem interesting, but let’s not get crazy” kind of guy. He’ll accept your pets with quiet dignity, but don’t expect immediate fireworks—he needs a moment to decide if you’re worthy of his affection. Once you’ve passed the Official Dusty Trust Test™ (which mostly involves existing near him without being suspicious), he’ll warm up and let his inner goofball shine. But until then, expect a few side-eyes and a thoughtful evaluation of your vibes. If we’re talking wild animal comparisons, Dusty is somewhere between a baby otter on caffeine and a wolf pup who just discovered zoomies. He’s playful, bouncy, and always down for an adventure—but he’s not always on the go. He’ll happily match your energy, whether that’s romping around or curling up for a nap after an exhausting day. Think “enthusiastic adventurer who also appreciates a good nap.” Car rides are a whole event—he starts out like an overexcited explorer, convinced he’s about to discover uncharted territory, but eventually settles down (preferably in someone’s lap, because personal space is a myth). On a leash, he’s got some strong-willed "this way is obviously better" opinions and the occasional urge to turn his leash into a snack. When it comes to home life, Dusty is the type to roll with whatever his humans are doing. If you’re out and about, he’s tagging along, ready to investigate the world. If you’re more of a homebody, he’s perfectly content sticking by your side, just so long as there’s some playtime thrown in. A securely fenced yard would be great, but it’s not a dealbreaker—he’s surprisingly adaptable and will thrive just fine with regular leash walks and a good routine. Now, if you’re looking for a super chill, laid-back dog who doesn’t need much stimulation, Dusty’s probably not your guy. He loves to play, he loves to socialize, and he’s the dog that will always bring the fun—so if you’re someone who prefers a more calm, quiet life and doesn’t have the time to match his personality, you might want to pass. But if you're up for a fluffy little adventurer who wants to be involved in everything? Dusty’s all in. Dusty is, shockingly, potty trained—yes, you read that right. A three-month-old puppy who already knows where to do his business like a respectable member of society. Honestly, that alone makes him a rare gem. We’re talking “should probably be in the Puppy Hall of Fame” level impressive. And when it comes to kennels? He’s not one of those dramatic types who act like they’ve been sentenced to life in solitary confinement. Nope, Dusty is a model citizen. He settles in like a pro, no wailing, no escape attempts, no gnawing on the bars like a deranged cartoon prisoner. He just accepts his fate, takes a nap, and probably dreams about his next adventure. Basically, he’s got better coping skills than most adults. Dusty may look like a fluffy angel, but don’t let that innocent face fool you—this boy is a certified sneaker smuggler. He has a particular fondness for shoes, which means if you leave them lying around, he’ll take that as a personal invitation to relocate them… possibly with some extra “custom distressing” courtesy of his puppy teeth. So, what kind of home would be perfect for this little mischief-maker? Someone who understands that puppies will puppy. If you’re the type who absentmindedly kicks your shoes off in the middle of the floor and then gasps in horror when they mysteriously disappear, Dusty is going to keep you on your toes—literally. He’d do best with a family that keeps their valuables (and by valuables, I mean anything remotely chewable) put away and is willing to redirect his chewing to something actually meant for dogs. Bonus points if you have a good sense of humor and don’t mind occasionally finding your sneakers in odd locations. Dusty’s barking style? Well, he’s definitely not auditioning for a role in the Bark Olympics. He’s more of a “casual commentator” type. Dusty barks because, well, life is full of exciting little moments, and he just feels the need to keep you in the loop. It’s not out of boredom or because he enjoys the sound of his own voice (though he is a Pyr, so he does have that “I’m the king of the world” vibe sometimes). He’s got that laid-back, “I’ll let you know if something’s up, but I’m not going to keep you up all night about it” attitude. So, here’s the deal—Dusty’s waiting for you to be his human, but he’s not just going to hand himself over to anyone. Nope. He needs someone special, someone willing to fill out the adoption application at https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app so we can send it off to his foster family and officially start this magical journey together. And just to keep things interesting (because who doesn’t love a little adventure?), you’ll need to pick him up in the exotic, thrill-filled land of Hutchinson, Kansas. So, if you’re ready to add a little Dusty to your life (and by "a little Dusty," we mean a fluffy ball of happy fun), hit up that adoption application and let’s make this love story happen. It’s as simple as clicking a button, and trust me, you’ll get a lifetime of tail wags, fuzzy cuddles, and the occasional bark about leaves that are just too suspicious to ignore. Dusty’s waiting—don’t make him keep watching Netflix alone.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Dusty, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
