**New Notes 4/13/25!** Meet Freckles ACCT-A-217089! Freckles is a 3-year-old female who was brought in by animal protection officers as a stray. Freckles was found in a house along with a cat when APO’s responded to a call about an eviction where animals were left behind. She walked nicely on leash and went to the bathroom once outside. The volunteer brought her into the office and she was aloof, but did allow the volunteer to gently pet her. We had someone pass through the office and she did not react, but just stared nervously with a low tail. She yawned and lip licked when first being pet, but remained leaning on the volunteer for rubs. She came up to my desk to sniff me and then retreated after a few moments. She went right back into her kennel.” Per volunteer 4/13/25: "Freckles was brave and trusting today. She wasn't quite ready to come out, but after seeing how overwhelmed and defensive she got in Playgroup we wanted to see if a slower more controlled 1:1 dog interaction could make her a new friend and help her feel more comfortable opening up to us. Playgroup: Freckles entered to the middle of the yard but quickly sought out the nearest human to sit next to. She retreated to a corner when approached by multiple dogs, corrected defensively without vocalization or aggression and was removed from the yard with the goal to try a more mellow pairing later. Crate Out: Freckles was not thrilled as I approached opening the door to her crate. She was curled up laying down and only picked up her head to give me big wide side eyes. She also appeased me showing her belly. I was patient to let her process and was eventually able to lasso her with no negative reactions. Freckles perked up and came right out once leashed, but with a tucked tail. Handling: I watched for signs telling me she wanted to go back to her crate, but she was calm, willing and easy to handle. If I guided her, she moved along without protest. I let her take lead and explore at times as well. She was comfortable in general being around me but was not ready to interact directly when I squatted down to welcome her. I respected her choice. Dog Meets: Freckles showed enough interest seeking some sniffs without being prompted that we gave the situation a chance eventually moving to a drop-leash session, but mostly she tolerated all of us. Eventually we ended the session when she sought either a corner or me as a safe space. She offered corrections on several occasions asking for space (from dogs) but did not aggress. Crate In: Freckles went right into her crate to lay down. I used the clip method to prevent making her uncomfortable." Per staff 4/13: “Playgroup 4/13: Steerable with spray bottle. At the gate, nervous, stiff, tail tucked. In yard, dainty, offered corrections when pressured, fearful when greeted (pooped), sat in corner.” Per staff 4/9: “Approached the kennel and she was laying down, wide eyes, starting shaking. Tossed in a treat and she Ingored it. Went around to the backside where she was laying and she started shaking more. I opened the door and touched her with the leash, she moved away, pooped, laid down, was shaking and peed. Had aca put sheet over kennel.” Medical Notes: Per an exam on 4/11: “Extremely fearful since arrival, expressing bowels and bladder when attempting any interaction with her. Curled in a ball, whale eye, trembling.” Freckles was started on gabapentin and trazadone. Per an exam on 4/8: -Eyes are pink -Teeth have slight tartar and yellow staining -Intact female, possibly post partum -Skin issues -Scared ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
