Dogs are often thought of as being man's best friend but frequently a dog can also be a dog's best friend. Such is the case with the dynamic duo of Xander & Harry! Our rescue was contacted by a shelter in AL to see if we could help Xander find a new home. This furry Golden Retriever mix was given the thumb's up and we made plans to bring him to the vet clinic where our dogs are cared for. Within a few hours, Lisa (our lead volunteer in AL) was contacted again by the shelter requesting that we take Harry as well, as the fellas are very bonded. We couldn't bear to break up these two BFFs and they are now Sunshine dogs! One of the volunteers in AL shared, "Xander (Golden mix) didn’t wag his tail initially when I took him out of his kennel, but once he got outside, he acted playful. Then we just sat down and I rubbed his belly and let him get to know me and trust me. I talked to him for a while and reassured him and pet ted him. He was loving the attention. He was very curious about the other dogs who came out and was friendly and curious about them too. After that, he just sat and got some sun and let me pet him. He’s a real cutie pie!" "Harry (who appears to be a Lab mix) was a bit more interactive and wagged his tail quickly. Once outside, he did his business and then let me pet him. And, once he saw the other dogs, he was curious and greeted them in a friendly manner at the fence but was not as excited as Xander was about them. Harry sat down in grass for a few pics - super chill guy and very handsome! I gave all of them treats, I should add, and they gobbled them up!" Now for the best part — these sweet boys are relaxing and becoming more comfortable each day. They are wagging their tails when greeting the kennel staff each morning. Whatever happened to cause these two wonderful boys to become homeless, their world was turned upside down but they are going to thrive in a quiet home with TLC, love, and attention. Because the boys have done so well in each other's company, we will place them as a bonded pair. Adopting a pair does not mean double the work. Often two dogs are easier than one as they keep each other company and occupied with playtime - and you get double the love and double the fun! The fellas are estimated to be about 2 years old, are up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, micro-chipped and heartworm negative. Zander weighs 57 lbs and Harry weighs in at 60 lbs. They have been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention and will be ready to travel to the northeast to be directly adopted in mid-May. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. If you are already approved to adopt through SGRR, have a quiet home, a fenced yard, and your specialty is TLC, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Harry and Xander. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to learn more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog. Please click on the Donation link below to support SGRR Harry and Xander.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Xander and Harry, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
