Name: Tootsie   Best Guess for Breed:  Beagle and terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 4 years as of April 2025      Gender:  Female Approximate Weight:   26 lbs Gets Along With:  Other dogs!  We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living At: Lucky Dog's South Carolina rescue campus; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to come up after completing heartworm treatment.  Special Adoption Considerations: In certain home settings - where the environment might be louder or more intense - this dog would do better with another dog in the home to give her confidence.  Heartworm Information: Tootsie is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.  We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! This sweetie is eagerly looking forward to having her own humans for sniffy walks and all the adventures they can dream up. And then pets and cuddles and belly scritches at the end of a fun day together. Andshe'll want quality kibble and a cushy dog bed. Most of all, though, she is a wise and experienced dog and knows what the most important thing in life is. She wants to know she's safe and loved. In exchange she promises all the adoring gazes and happy tail wags she's storing up, and loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say? Is Tootsie the one you see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: We will update this once she has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with her foster.
