My story

This sweet, goofy fella has been a beloved companion for the past five years—and he’s got all the best qualities of a loyal best friend. King James is an energetic fella who’s just as happy snuggling on the couch as he is hiking through the woods or co-piloting on errands. He’s housebroken, crate-trained, knows his commands (like “sit”), and is always up for a game of fetch or a good romp in the yard. He absolutely loves toys—especially squeaky ones and stuffed animals—and doesn’t mind sharing while he plays. You can pet him all over, even while he’s mid-play, and he’ll stay loose and waggy the whole time. King James is very social and thrives on being close to his people. He’ll follow you from room to room just to be near. He can get a little overexcited when guests arrive, but with his crate as a cozy chill zone and some training basics, he settles in just fine. When it comes to treats, he waits patiently, though he can be a little snatchy—so an open palm is the way to go! Due to a life change (his former family had to move), King is now looking for a new forever home. His perfect match? Someone who loves the outdoors, appreciates a loyal shadow by their side, and wants a dog who’s equal parts playmate and snuggle buddy. I offered her a treat and he took it gently. He was ready to go and jumpy when trying to leash him up, but with a calm voice and a promise of a walk he let me lasso him and he navigated out of the shelter with ease. LEASH SKILLS: Walks well on leash minimal pulling HANDLING: King James is very social w his handler, knows sit and was happy to be outside. I was able to pet him all over his body while he remained loose with a wagging tail - even on his cauliflower ear. He thoroughly enjoyed playing with a stuffie and was unfazed when I touched the toy and pet him while he played. He enjoys romping in the yard and is very playful. He knows sit and waits patiently for treats but can be snatchy with them so open palm is best. Returned to kennel with ease. PLAY: Very playful with toys and handler TOYS: Loved squeaky toys and stuffies took possession but released for me to throw again. 04/17/2025 staff notes, playgroup: Offensive, assertive, instigated fight with Pumpkin, pumpkin corrected.
