Meet Campfire – A Tale of Second Chances. Campfire’s journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s one filled with hope, resilience, and heart. This 4-year-old terrier mix arrived at the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) on April 2, 2025, after being picked up by animal control as a stray wandering the rugged streets of Gulfport. When she first arrived, Campfire was scared, withdrawn, and unsure of the constant human interaction that came with shelter life. Quiet and fiercely independent, she had clearly been through more than her fair share. At first, we feared Campfire might never learn to trust people again. But with time, patience, tasty treats, and lots of gentle, one-on-one care, something amazing began to happen — Campfire started to heal. Slowly but surely, she’s been opening up and letting her sweet, gentle spirit shine through. One of Campfire’s favorite pastimes? Soaking up the sun. Give her a sunny spot to relax in, and she’s one happy pup — toss in a treat or two, and she’s in heaven. While she’s still on the quieter side, Campfire has proven to be a loyal, calm companion who just needs a peaceful home where she can continue to feel safe, loved, and stress-free. Campfire would thrive in a mellow environment, preferably with experienced dog owners who understand the value of patience and space.
