My story

Cowgirl is a 3-year-old Corgi/Pembroke Welsh and American Blue Heeler mix with the biggest ears and the most endearing personality! She’s a quirky, sensitive girl who’s still figuring out the world around her. Cowgirl is crate trained and adores spending time in her cozy safe space. She’s quiet, shy, and still working on her potty training—but she’s incredibly smart and eager to learn. Cheese, peanut butter, and chicken are the way to her heart, and once she feels secure, her sweet and goofy side starts to shine. She’s a little parkour artist with a love for zoomies and clever escapes—always keeping you on your toes in the most charming way! Cowgirl is dog selective—she’s not looking to be best friends with every pup she meets, and that’s okay! Just like people, animals don’t always love everyone at first sight and sometimes prefer a smaller, trusted circle. Cowgirl would do best in a calm home with older children (16+) and an experienced, patient family who can help her continue to build confidence at her own pace. She’s already showing that she wants to connect and be close—she just needs someone to give her the space and time to bloom into the loyal little shadow she’s destined to be. When Cowgirl arrived at Anderson Humane from one of our partner shelters in Oklahoma, she tested positive for Heartworm. But don’t worry—this sweet girl is on the road to recovery, and she just needs a loving home to see her through it! The staff here believes that the very best place for a Heartworm-positive pup like Cowgirl to recover is with a forever family who can provide her with the comfort, patience, and love she deserves. If you choose to adopt Cowgirl, our amazing clinic team will be with you every step of the way to answer questions and offer support. Heartworm treatment typically takes about three months and includes a few simple at-home steps to help her stay calm and safe while healing. The last step is a follow-up test six months after treatment begins. The good news? The treatment is highly successful, and we fully expect Cowgirl to make a complete recovery! And just so you know—Heartworm is only transmitted by mosquitoes and can’t be passed from dog to dog. Cowgirl is ready to find her person and start her next chapter. Could that be you? For more information, email info@ahconnects.org or call us at 847-697-2880 x: 0, and the staff will be happy to help you. All of our dogs and puppies go home spayed or neutered, microchipped, and heartworm tested (for dogs 7 months and older). They are also up to date on core vaccines, as well as heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives. Each adoption includes a 3.5-pound bag of dog or puppy food and a free vet exam at one of our participating veterinary partners.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Cowgirl, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
