From the very first time I met Rhea, the first thing that came to my mind was "she cannot be anymore perfect!" For the most part shepherds are not typically the dogs I gravitate towards, I typically go for more of those meathead bowling ball types but not with Rhea. From the second I leashed her up and had that first interaction with her, I fell in love! She is the most loving, composed, and gentle shepherd mix I have ever met. She has this calming aura about her that instantly puts your mind at ease and makes you want to keep her around you at all times. Her presence is so soothing, it's irresistible. Watch her video and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about and I wouldn't be surprised if that "aura" radiates from her video: https://youtu.be/_3F4w3RC8HY?si=mSjlmGCSrJZjMKnr Rhea is a Belgian Malinois mix approximately 6 years old and currently weighs 66 lbs and she still has some "love" pounds to gain and once she has we expect her ideal weight to be around 77 lbs. She is a rescue dog and with any rescue it's always a mystery and we cannot guarantee breed or age but it's a pretty safe bet she has some Malinois in there somewhere and she is the most perfect Malinois mix. When it comes to Rhea, anyone that knows her and you ask them about her it is all good things. Everyone talks about how gentle she is, how easy she is to walk on a leash, how calm she is, how patient she is, how smart she is, etc. the list can seriously go on and on. As repetitive as this all may sound, it's the truth and it's the only way I know how to convey how perfect she is. Rhea is very dog friendly and has been around so many different types of dogs and has done beautifully with every single one. She has been around shy dogs, dogs that are rude and pushy, dogs that rough housing around her, and dogs that are calm like her and she does great. Rhea is not a playful lady with other dogs. She gives off more of the laid back chill hangout type of vibes. So when she is around dogs that are all about play and have a more rowdy play style, she will give a very subtle "hey, I'm not the playful type" kind of boundary correction to those dogs and she goes on about her business. Which is for the most part, hanging out in the yard and enjoying the fresh air. She doesn't mind if dogs are playing around her having a good time, she is just the type that isn't interested in playing. If you have a playful dog in your home and you're looking for a playmate for them, Rhea is not your girl but if you have a dog that is chill, likes to hang out and just enjoys the company of other dogs, then Rhea is your girl. Rhea has no problem the only dog in your life either and being the center of your world. She does not need the company of another dog to help her feel comfortable and open up nor does she need another dog to fulfill her energy needs. She is very calm and relaxed already and would be perfectly fine being your one and only. One of the things that I love the most about Rhea besides everything else I had already mentioned about is how patient and smart she it. This girl can stay in a perfect sit position for however long you want her to. She has amazing impulse control and her attentiveness with people is out of this world. For instance, my self and the director of behavior and intake were eating our lunches and we pulled out some snacks for Rhea and she knew those snacks were for her and she just sat there waiting ever so patiently. She never once broke her sit position or tried to nudge us for those snacks or even attempt to try to get us to hurry up. It was something so impressive that we noticed about her that we even shared a cute lady and the tramp moment with her where we would share food and Rhea waited for us to undo the wrappers and get into position and still even waited until we told her it was go time! Even with that, she was so incredibly gentle and even hesitated sharing food that closely with a person. It was sweet, because once we reassured her it was okay she made sure to be respectful and gentle. Rhea knows more than sit too! She knows how to shake, lay down, has incredible house manners, and is crate trained and potty trained. Once she arrives to your home she may need a reminder that her kennel is a safe space, which is completely normal for dogs to need that reminder when going to knew places. With patience and practice, she will quickly remember the kennel is there to be her little sanctuary. Anything you tell her to do, you only have to tell her once and she does it with execution almost every time. Rhea has been around kids ages 1e and a 5 year old and she was so gentle and relaxed! She was with the 13-year-old for the majority of the time and he was giving her commands like guard and press, like a trained malinois, and she just looked at him like she was completely in love with him and followed every command that he gave her to the best of her ability. She did anything and everything with the older couple that was with her as well as the thirteen year old, walking, sitting, paw, guard, she did it all and was happy as could be she did it with and without treats. If they stopped while walking, she stopped. She never pulled. We sat her down, and the little girl came up to her after, slowly and gently putting her hand out. The little girl was shy, but she just sat there and waited for the little girl to pet her. Almost like Rhea knew that the little girl was shy and didn’t want to rush her so she just patiently waited until the little girl was ready. If Rhea see’s a squirrel at while out on a walk she will look at it and just watch. Rhea doesn’t try to go after the squirel and you don’t even have to tell her to stay or leave it. Rhea is a perfect car rider and can easily jump in and down from the truck with ease. She will lay down in the back seat and is so quiet that you Almost forget she is even there! Rhea enjoys being outside and we believe she would be happiest in a home with a backyard where she can stretch her legs, enjoy the fresh air, and catch some rays! We are willing to test Rhea with anything you need us to order to ensure it’s a perfect match for you. We can make anything happen! Just let us know. Our rescue has a 2 acre property in Texas where we assess every animal with trainers on staff, we modify behavior as needed, and create individualized behavior plans to help prepare dogs for their future families including crate training, potty training, leash walking, etc. Our fosters are able to attend group trainings and socialization play groups to keep dogs adoption-ready. Our on-site trainers support the positive growth of our dogs and we enjoy seeing their progress! Our commitment to comprehensive medical care sets us apart. We've received glowing feedback from veterinarians who commend our dedication to ensuring the health and well-being of every animal in our care with treatments that often go above and beyond. Our adoption fees reflect the extensive care and resources that go into each animal we save. The adoption fee is a donation to the mission and goes far beyond getting a fully vetted pet. The rescue’s hard costs alone (excluding transport) for a healthy dog to go through our program typically range between $412 to $859, which includes boarding, food, medications, vaccines, and spay/neuter. For heartworm-positive dogs, hard costs are upwards of $1,368. Additionally, dogs requiring extended boarding, extra training, or extra medical care—such as dental work, vision care, or orthopedic care—can lead to expenses running into the thousands. Also, included in the adoption fee are costs to cover transport up to the Pacific Northwest or East Coast. Transport is a significant additional expense to the rescue. While adoption fees help cover part of these expenses, we want to emphasize that the rescue does not receive government funding and must fundraise to offset the remaining expense balance which ranges $100-1,000++ per animal on these direct costs. It doesn’t stop there!
