MIGHTY: Mighty has the potential to be a sweet, gentle companion with a very cat-savvy adopter who is willing to put in the extra effort to help him come out of his shell. He is easily stressed or overwhelmed during transitions, and is looking for an adopter who is willing to give him as much time as he needs to settle in - it could be a couple of days, weeks, or longer. His success will be dependent on how well adopters are able to read and appropriately respond to his body language. We recommend setting him up in his own space to start (an extra bedroom or bathroom, for example). Choose a space that people or animals do not have access to unless you are going in to clean or feed. He should be left alone initially as he adjusts. HIs space should include plenty of hiding places, ideally with access to vertical surfaces as well like a cat tree or a cat-proofed shelf, and easy access to a litter box, food, and water. Never approach him or try to pet or pick him up when he is hiding or showing fearful body language like curling up into a tight, tense ball, flattening his ears backward or to the sides, hissing, growling, swatting, etc. Ideally, with enough time to himself, he will begin to relax and move around more freely while youre visiting his room. Gradually give him more access to the home only when he is confidently moving about his environment and remains confident with relaxed body language when you go in to spend time with him. Meeting new people can be very overwhelming for Mighty. It is possible he may only ever be comfortable within his small bubble. Adopters should be comfortable with a cat who may not ever want to expand their social circle. If you do have people over, be sure to give CAT the option to stay in a different space, like in another room behind a door, under the bed, somewhere up high, etc.. He should never be forced to interact with new people if his body language or behavior indicates that he is afraid. He may be conflicted about close handling/petting, especially as he is settling in. Think of him as a pet himself on you kind of cat until he is more comfortable, meaning he should always be allowed to initiate an interaction with you vs. you going up to pet him. If you think Mighty could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevin`s Farm Adoption Center in Methuen.
