Every once in a while, a dog will come into the shelter and immediately steal the hearts of our volunteers and staff members. These VSPs (Very Special Pups) have often overcome tremendous obstacles and remain resilient, loving, gentle and are truly inspirational. One such VSP is courageous, optimistic, ever-loving Amarok. Amarok came into the shelter not only blind, but also suffering from additional illnesses. He continues to receive care for his valley fever, which is easily managed with daily medication. Amarok has shown his strength, determination and adaptability- the shelter is a scary place for any dog, but is extra stressful for one who is vision-impaired. We’re hoping that we can get him outta here and into a loving home, lickety-split! Amarok’s volunteer friends cheer him on, sharing:“I selected Amarok to be “Dog of the Day;” this is where he has the opportunity to meet people in a small play yard. After thoroughly examining the yard he settled nicely to meet his guests. He was calm, cool, and collected with all guests and passersby. He`s the sweetest fella who loves touch. He has a few medical issues that the clinic is working on and he`s showing significant improvement. He`s a smart fella and will adjust quickly to his new home given just a little time. Come meet this stunner of a fella today!”“I adore Amarok!! He’s vision impaired but very very accepting of touch and handling. He’s extremely gentle and allows himself to be picked up and carried, but is also walking bravely on leash these days. I gave him a bath and he was extremely tolerant and enjoyed drying off in the sunshine afterwards. Amarok is calm and quiet in his kennel and I suspect would be a quiet little companion in a home environment. He’s vulnerable in the shelter and I would love to see him in a home where he can learn the lay of the land and feel truly comfortable and safe. He’s done well with a couple of different roommates and I think appreciates having the company of a calm furry friend. I would take this boy home myself if I could!!” Amarok has shared his kennel politely and would like to meet any resident dogs before heading home to ensure a good fit. He has received training from one of our volunteer dog trainers to learn cues and strategies related to his vision impairment. Any adoptive or foster family will receive literature before taking him home and follow-up training from our Top Dogs volunteer training team to support a suc
