My story

A volunteer writes:Young Skittles lived with a very large number of cats, brought little by little to the Manhattan Care Center over the last few months. Skittles had already been a mother before she came to us. It must have come as a shock to find herself alone in a kennel and without her brood. No wonder that Skittles is soo shy and avoidant of her new caretakers. Nothing was told to us about her past life. Skittles seems comfortable in the safety of her cubby, lounging, grooming herself, eating treats when nobody looks and venturing in her kennel to eat and do her business when her ward is quiet. As soon as I open her door, she freezes then backs off, looking for exits. She does not hiss or strike but makes you understand that she is not yet ready to share her life with a visitor. Skittles obviously can not stay for ever and ever in a cage. She must have a chance at coming out of her shell and it needs to be outside of the care center with an adopter familiar with adult cat socialization. I have two such cats in my home. It took a while, quite a while to get the pet out of them but they are now sweet lapcats although still with an independent streak...One year old Skittles, a pretty little tiger, needs you... Ask to meet her at the Manhattan care Center.I am looking for a home with a patient person.I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.Skittles tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. Primary Color: Tabby Weight: 8.9 Age: 1yrs 2mths 0wks

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Skittles, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
