Name:  Avril      Best Guess for Breed:  Chihuahua mix     Best Guess for Age:   1.5 years as of May 2025      SEX:   Female   Approximate Weight:  10 lbs   Gets Along With:  Avril has lived with dogs, cats, and kids, and has done well with them all!   Currently Living at:   South Carolina shelter foster home; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to come up after completing heartworm treatment!   Special adoption considerations: Avril is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment.  We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! This sweetie is eagerly looking forward to having her own humans for sniffy walks and all the adventures they can dream up. And dog school so she can show how super smart she is. And then pets and cuddles and belly scritches at the end of a fun day together. And she'll want quality kibble and a cushy dog bed.  Most of all, though, she wants to know she's safe and loved. In exchange she promises all the adoring gazes and happy tail wags she's storing up, and loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say?
