My story

Meet Mikey! A big-hearted goofball who’s as sweet as he is strong. This friendly boy was rescued from a busy intersection by a Good Samaritan, and ever since arriving at the shelter, he’s been charming everyone with his affectionate nature and soulful eyes. Mikey is a certified 100/10 good boy who lives for pets, cuddles, and tennis balls. He knows sit, paw, and lay down, and whether he’s romping around the yard or just sitting quietly by your side, he’s happiest being close to his people. He’s also perfected the classic pupper lean. He’s eager to please, takes treats gently, and is super handler-oriented. While Mikey can get excited on leash and still needs a bit of help with his doggy social skills, he’s easy to redirect and walks beautifully with the right guidance. Mikey is ready to be someone’s best friend for life. Could that be you? As soon as we saw that he was out of ISO, we jumped on the opportunity to see how he did for one night outside of the shelter. Mikey behaved exactly as expected - a 100/10 good boy. Mikey was quick to start playing with toys and he especially loves a good tug rope - tossing it in the air and chasing after it. While he was with us, he didn't show much interest in food and only a slight interest in treats (loves peanut butter!) We also learned that when there is human food around, he will absolutely give you the sweetest eyes in the world in an effort to get some. When it's time to go outside, Mikey knows it. He whines out of pure joy and excitement to be in some fresh air. Once we're outside on a leash, Mikey is a dream walker, giving plenty of slack on the leash and oftentimes walking right by your side. (https://youtube.com/shorts/HyIq_grkdkg?feature=share) Our neighborhood has a lot of outdoor cats and every time we encountered one, Mikey could not have cared any less! Sure, his ears perked up and he noticed them, but other than that he just kept walking right on by without a care in the world. No prey drive for cats whatsoever! Mikey had zero interest in going into a crate, so we caved and let him sleep in bed with us. He was happy to be in a cozy bed with humans getting a good night's sleep. He was a great snuggler and even slept in his doggy bed on the ground at one point. We did put Mikey into a crate the next morning to see how he would do, and even though it took some effort to get him into it, he did lay down and settle (though quietly whined.) Overall, we think Mikey would thrive in a home with adults and children and even cats. 06/04/2025 volunteer notes: Mikey is a gem of a doggo. He knows sit, paw and lay down. He loves to chase a tennis ball. But he also just sits by your side when you’re doing nothing but sitting. He wants all of the pets and love and has the pittie lean perfected!! 100/10 certified good boy. 05/31/2025 Volunteer notes: He was easy to leash and very nice on leash, no pulling at all! Pretty energetic in the play yard, enjoyed romping and jumping around. He took pets all over and liked cuddles, super sweet boy!! Very easy overall. Took treats really gently, very responsive when called. Really handler oriented. No issues returning to kennel or walking past other handlers. 05/31/2025 staff notes, playgroup: Like last time, spent a lot of time with Truffle, but increasingly became a bit much for her. Though she continued to appropriately correct him for persistent attempts to mount, he continued to circle back around. Did remain sensitive to steering, but would fixate on trying again. Eventually removed to give Truffle a break; he wasn't socializing much with the other dogs. 05/25/2025 staff notes, playgroup: Timid and tense at the gate, not very steerable, interested, initiates play 05/24/2025 staff notes: Approached the crate and he was standing with loose body. He ate a treat and was easy to leash. He pulled hard on leash. He liked sniffing the maze but didn’t engage in eating the treats. I then sat on a bench and he solicited attention from me, and took cheese gently. He had a loose body and soft eyes as I touched him all Over. When seeing dogs he would fixate and pull towards them and was fairly easy to redirect, he is just strong.
