My story

Introducing Cletus! Playful Affectionate Sweetheart Shy Hi, I’m Cletus! I’m a sweet-natured, sun-loving, couch potato. I might start off a little shy, but give me time and a little love, and I’ll blossom into the most loyal, affectionate companion you could ever hope for. Whether I’m curled up on the couch or soaking up the sunshine, I’m all about the calm, cozy life. I’m a mellow guy indoors with just the right dash of playful energy when the mood strikes. I love short zoomies, sunbathing, and curling up next to someone I trust. New places and people can make me nervous at first, but once I feel safe, I open up into a happy, snuggly goof. I absolutely adore children—I warmed up to the kids in my foster home right away, and I’m always gentle with them. With adults, I appreciate a slow and kind introduction. I tend to warm up faster to women than men, but I get there with a little time and patience. I’m submissive around other dogs and mostly do my own thing. I’m cautious when meeting new canine friends but not aggressive. I even ignore the cats in my foster home. If another dog is calm and respectful, we could be a great match with proper introductions. What I Love Snuggly naps on the couch Sunbathing on the deck Tennis balls, rope toys, and my tennis ball ring Hot dogs (especially as treats for going into my crate!) Occasional backyard zoomies What I Don’t Love Fast, loud, or pushy introductions New adventures—I'm more of a homebody Roughhousing with people/dogs I don’t know yet I may not know fancy tricks (yet!), but I respond well to my name and a firm “no.” I’ve got great indoor manners, and I’m crate-trained—I sleep in my kennel at night or when my humans are out. I’m also fully housebroken. I walk well on a leash, though new sights and sounds—like cars or other dogs—can make me a bit jumpy. I’ll thrive with gentle, confidence-building training to help me feel secure in the world. I’m recovering well from my neuter surgery and am in great shape overall! I’m ready to settle into my forever home and continue living my best (and comfiest) life. Forever Home Wishlist A patient and understanding family to help me continue building confidence A midsize to large yard where I can play and sunbathe A physical fence is recommended but not a deal-breaker Kids? Absolutely! I love them No apartments or condos, please—I need a bit more space A family that’s gone 6 hours or less at a time Another calm, respectful dog could be a great friend Fun Fact: I’m the gentlest treat-taker my foster family has ever met—sometimes I’m so gentle I need help getting the treat into my mouth. If you’re looking for a gentle soul to love, laugh with, and lounge beside, I might be your guy. I can’t wait to find my forever family. If you think Cletus will be a great addition to your family, please reach out to us by following one of the options below. 1. If you have already completed the adoption or foster application process and are an approved adopter with UMGDR, please contact Cletus’ Placement Coordinator at katie@thegreatdanerescue.com to learn more about him. 2. If you are not yet an approved adopter through UMGDR, you must complete our application process before you can be considered to adopt a dog through our rescue. Please visit https://www.thegreatdanerescue.com/adoption-application to complete an application and submit your $25 application fee to begin the process. After you have been approved, please reach out to Cletus’ Placement Coordinator by emailing katie@thegreatdanerescue.com. This precious Dane is located in Urbandale, IA ##2345963##
