My story

Meet Ollie - Ollie came to us from one of our partner shelters down south. Recently we noticed he was having some pain and fever and was reluctant to stand or walk. We confirmed the diagnosis of Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (or HOD for short).   Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD) is an orthopedic developmental disorder that can cause limping, pain, and swelling of a dog’s joints. It can be seen in rapidly growing large breed and giant breed dogs but  is also seen in a variety of breeds. It is not fully understood WHY some animals develop this growing disorder but it believed to be related to recent vaccines and high protein puppy food.  Vets can diagnose HOD in dogs as early as a few months old, and it occurs most frequently in dogs less than 1 year old. Male puppies appear to have a greater likelihood of being affected than female puppies.  Most dogs with mild to moderate HOD will recover and go on to lead a normal life.  We have seen HOD in many puppies that have come to us from the southern states.  We have seen several dozen cases of HOD in puppies over the decades of rescue and the pups have all made a full recovery and only 1-2 have had a second flare up which has easily been controlled with anti inflammatory medication (and pain medication if needed). In our experience HOD pups have all had  complete recovery after their done growing and gone on to live amazing and healthy lives. This should NOT affect Ollie once he is done growing. Ollie will simply need to eat adult dog food and while he is being fostered our clinic will continue to monitor him with periodic rechecks here in our shelters vet clinic. Any treatment he might need will be provided to him should he need. Ollie is an absolute lovebug and snugglebuddy whose had a pretty crazy life in his short time on earth and he's hoping to find a loving life long home with a wonderful family. Saturday open hours 10am to 4pm. We are closed on Sunday and Monday. All surrenders are still by prior approval and appointment only. Even if you are only coming in to look during our open hours, you can still fill out our application prior to visiting. This will save time if you do decide to adopt. Preference on adopting a pet is given to our Shelter Supporters and VIP Donors   .  When animals arrive at the shelter, VIP donors will be emailed and given the first option to set up an appointment to view an animal of their choice. If you don't See any pets on our PETS for ADOPTION PAGE - it simply means that all of the animals were adopted.  We have several areas in/around the shelter to view and interact with the pet/s that you are potentially going to adopt. This includes outdoor, fully fenced yards. We encourage you to bring currently owned dogs so you can introduce them to any dogs that you are interested in adopting. Planning YOUR Visit to Adopt: please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment time,  please make sure you have any/all necessary paperwork required for adoption  and help us stick to our schedule/s - so others do NOT have to wait. You should plan  * For cats/kittens plan for 30 to 45 minutes. * For dogs/puppies plan for 45 to 60 minutes.   If you have another dog/s at home - make sure to   bring him/her - we have plenty of space/areas to do a meet and greet with a new dog and your dog/s.
