Poki is a striking black poodle who floats like a butterfly when out for a walk. How she moves on those endless legs is like poetry in motion. Although naturally elegant and refined looking, she is also a couch potato who likes to conk out in the same room as her person. She can often be found lounging on the sofa. When she turns to you, you’ll realize she’s waiting for a cue or a hint as to what you’re up to. While mostly sedate and reserved, she is not above jumping on the bed and flipping around with her mouth open. More often, she will seek your attention by leaning into you or hiding her face in your leg. She likes nudging you with her nose. Hence, the name Poki. She may even press the top of her head and nose into you. It’s like she’s saying: “I’m here. Do you see me? Do you feel me?” There may be a reason for this behavior. Poki is a sensitive soul who came into care after her person got dementia and moved to assisted living. Because we know she has already undergone the stress of living with a person who bit by bit was disappearing on her (while physically present), we would love to see her go to a home where her main person is fully there for her, truly present, ideally someone who is home most of the time. Her ideal home would be a place with a yard, a sunny spot to nap in, and the excitement another dog pal offers. Generally speaking, Poki is not a high-energy dog. She is content to loaf much of the day. Even so, no one seeing her chase a minidoodle mix would believe Poki is almost 12 years old. She can really zip, racing around the yard. She also delights in retrieving her squeaky duck toy and offering play bows, her long front legs outstretched like a giraffe getting water. A sedate walker, Poki is great on the leash. Most of the time, she strolls at your side or even a few steps behind you. When dogs on a walk bark at her, she acts like she doesn’t even notice them. Poki is housetrained and crate trained. While she sleeps just fine in a dog bed in her person’s bedroom, she would prefer sleeping in the human bed. A guide dog school dropout, Poki has a solid sit. And she waits patiently to be told she can exit the porch door. We suspect she knows way more than she lets on. She rides well in the car, settling down for a snooze. When meeting other dogs, she is well socialized and behaves appropriately. Although mostly softspoken and reserved, Poki goes into full-throated bark mode when there’s a visitor at the door. But once she meets the person, they’re her new best friend. Note: As a poodle, Poki has hair, not fur. Since it just keeps growing, it needs regular grooming for her comfort.
