My story

Sparky is a ~12-month-old neutered male pup, possibly a Yorkie/chihuahua mix, weighing just over 5 lbs. With his wiry tricolor coat, fox-like ears, and cotton-candy-textured face, he’s as charming as he is adorable! Sparky was found in a rural part of North Carolina near the South Carolina border, dragging his hind legs and extremely weak. X-rays revealed no skeletal injuries, and veterinarians were optimistic about his recovery. Thanks to their instincts and Sparky’s resilience, he’s made incredible progress in just weeks. He now walks, wags, runs, jumps, plays, and climbs stairs and ramps like a pro! In addition to hind leg weakness, Sparky has bilateral luxating patella that also contributes to his mobility. Though he doesn’t need special accommodations in daily life, he’s continuing physical therapy with a prescribed home routine of stretching and lots of walking to keep building strength. This is no problem for Sparky who is a HUGE fan of walks anywhere and anytime! Sparky’s personality is as bright as his name. He’s sweet, silly, smart, adaptable, affectionate, and wonderfully social—friendly with humans of all ages and dogs of all sizes. He especially enjoys playing with other dogs, but is respectful of dogs who prefer their space. The good news here is that puppy playtime is also great PT for Sparky! Sparky’s favorite things include leash walks, sniffaris, cuddle time, puzzle toys, and long-lasting chews. He handles himself well in public, at the vet, on leash, and in a crate. Sparky doesn't mind being picked up and cuddled and loves to give a few gentle kisses! He is house-trained and sleeps peacefully through the night. He does have some separation anxiety when no human is home, but he has come a long way to feeling more comfortable at home without his people. Sparky’s perfect forever family will be committed to maintaining his exercise regimen to help Sparky stay strong and healthy. Sparky would also like to stay social whether it's at home as part of your pack or out and about as your pocket-sized go-everywhere-do-everything dog. Sparky has overcome so much and is now ready to live his happiest, healthiest life. Could that be with you?

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Sparky, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
